Simple Man Chinese Drama Review

Simple Man Chinese Drama - Lee Si Yang, Chen Si Yu

Simple Man is a Chinese web drama with 17 episodes averaging about 30 minutes each. It tells the story of four people each looking for a way to solve their problems. They end up making a deal with a Demon website that gives them unique abilities, but they soon discover there is a lot more going on than they realized.

Simple Man had a really neat concept surrounding the mystery of the Demon website and how everyone is connected to it. It also presents its story in a unique way.

In the first half of the drama, each character and their personal story is introduced separately with about two episodes for each. Then in the second half, the character’s lives become intertwined as they tackle the mystery of the Demon website.

And while the concept was great, I don’t think the drama executed it that well. The biggest issue for me was that I think the drama tried to do too much and created a world populated with way to many characters.

Aside from already having to get to know a new main character every couple episodes, new supporting characters are constantly introduced. And many times these supporting characters had very minor roles. I think it would have been better if the narrative would have focused more strongly on the main characters with only a few key supporting characters. There was just too much going on.

And because of that, it sometimes made the story confusing as to exactly what was going on and why certain things were happening, especially in the second half of the drama. Of course, there was a mystery element to the whole story, but it was just laid out in a confusing way.

On the plus side, some of the personal stories of the characters are are very interesting. There’s a little bit of everything from humor to action to romance. It was also neat to see how everything surrounding the mystery of the Demon website eventually came together. The drama was nicely filmed with some neat effects too.

So while Simple Man did have a few things going for it, I just wasn’t able to really connect with it overall and found it pretty lacking. But I give it a lot of credit for its unique concept and format.

My Rating: 4/10
