We have casting confirmations for the new MBC drama Rebel Hong Gil Dong. It looks like Yoon Kyun Sang (Doctors) and Chae Soo Bin (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) will be starring. Yoon Kyun Sang is set to play the Hong Gil Dong character. Chae Soo Bin will
be a widower who is looking for revenge upon the King for the death of her husband.
Honey Lee (Come Back Ahjussi) has also been confirmed as the royal consort to the crazy and tyrannical King Yeonsangun whose first love was Hong Gil Dong. And Kim Ji Suk (Oh Hae Young Again) will be playing a famous killer.
So it looks like Ji Sung is definitely out of this one. He’s still a strong possibility for the upcoming drama Defendant though. No news on who will play the role of the King.
I was initially very excited at the prospect of such talented actors as Ji Sung, Nam Goong Min, and Honey Lee all acting together in one drama. This cast is a bit of a different direction than I anticipated, but with some shifting of expectations, I’m still excited about this drama and group of people.
Rebel Hong Gil Dong is based on the classic Korean folktale about a man born to a nobleman and a concubine who steals from the rich to give to the poor and becomes a revolutionary activist in Joseon. The drama comes from the writer of King’s Daughter Soo Baek Hyang and the PD of Kill Me, Heal Me.
Rebel Hong Gil Dong is scheduled to premiere in January 2017 on MBC.
