Korean Drama Update for October 2024

It was the time travel, rom-com Lovely Runner and the 8 episode rom-com Serendipity’s Embrace that I got in for the month of October. Here’s how it went:

Lovely Runner

Lovely Runner Korean Drama - Byun Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon

Lovely Runner is a fun time travel, romantic comedy. It has a well-developed and multi-layered story that remains pretty engaging all the way through. There’s plenty of humor and lots of fun characters. This is a series with a lot of heart. If you like time travel and rom-coms, Lovely Runner is a great entry in the genre.

There’s a super sweet romance at the center with a big, fated sort of feel to it. They have a fun rapport and good relationship progression as they face joy and hardship. Our fated couple of Sol and Seon Jae bring a heart-fluttering romance that you just want to see work out.  (Lovely Runner Review)

Serendipity’s Embrace

Serendipity's Embrace Korean Drama - Chae Jong Hyeop and Kim So Hyun

Serendipity’s Embrace is a pretty basic romantic comedy. It has a simple premise with two high school friends meeting again as adults and having to deal with their feelings. The pacing is laid back and nothing particularly exciting happens. The couple is sweet but pretty ordinary. There’s a dash of drama mixed with humor and a bit of heart.

Overall, Serendipity’s Embrace is pretty run-of-the-mill. The series was on the bland side and not very memorable. At only 8 episodes, it’s good if you want a simple, low-stress watch with a relationship journey at the center and just enough conflict to push things along. (Serendipity’s Embrace Review)

Finished 6 in October, many were started in the prior month.

Love Next Door – Very good story about how Korean parents treat their adult kids and how they should treat them. There’s enough family drama as well as romance without things like a murder mystery to mess things up. Strong all the way through with enough time for a happy ending during the last 2 episodes.

DNA Lover – SPOILERS – There’s a potentially decent story here but a few things that are difficult to reconcile: The FL is annoying AF and there’s very little reason I can see for ML to like her other than pity. They also seemed to put them together out of the blue. The 2nd ML is obviously the better choice so 2nd lead syndrome is strong on this one. There are also really serious undertones to everyone else’s story (ML mom is clearly mentally ill and potentially a murderer, FL dad committed suicide, 2nd FL is polyamourous author, FL has essentially been abused/ abandoned by her own mom/sister, and weirdest of all, the FL co-worker has suffered trauma as a middle school student blaming herself for a friend’s death at the hands of a bully, so much so that she sleeps in a closet!). So much going on and it’s all very uneven. Wanted to drop a few episodes in but ended up watching ‘til the end and would have been better never to have started since there was so much not to enjoy. Spent a lot of the last few episodes dealing with ML’s father’s dead mistress’s son’s vengeance against ML because he blamed him for the death of his mother when it was really his own fault. Total mess of a plot. Happy it’s over.

No Gain No Love – I can’t ever seem to get enough of Kim Dae Young and can watch him in anything. This one is no different. Has the same issue that Cinderella at 2AM has which is a much older FL and a much younger ML but Shin Min Ah seems to pull it off better than the FL in Cinderella. Her dimples and just cuteness helps a lot. Good story, goes back and forth from serious to comedic and wished it would have remained comedic but still super enjoyable.

I Openly Dream of Becoming Cinderella/ Dreaming of Cinde Fxxxing Rella/ Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale – It is fairly formulaic but since I LOVE the Cinderella trope and I love the actors and I love the hate-to-love, bickering, childish couple trope, this is perfect for me so it’s been added to the re-watch list. They turned a few things on its head like the step mother/sisters are actually nice and not cruel, and the poor girl wanting to marry rich is known to all parties so not finding out later and having the ML angry is not an issue. MLs back story is solid as well. Just enough light and just enough heavy.

What Comes After Love – This is very good but only if you’re in the mood for somber, morose, slow paced, staring into space type of a drama.

Iron Family – Dropped after a couple of episodes. Liked the cast but didn’t want feel like watching 50 episodes of money issues.

Wow! 6 dramas for October! It looks like you did pretty well with most of them 🙂 I’m interested in No Gain No Love, Love Next Door, and Cinderella. So I’m glad to hear good things about them.

I might check out DNA Lover at some point, but I haven’t heard good things about it, which tracks with your exprience. What Comes After Love also looks good, but I’d definitely have to be in the right mood for it. Iron Family is bit too long for me.

I hope your November is as productive as your October 😉
