Serendipity’s Embrace follows the story of an animation producer (Kim So Hyun) who had a difficult past relationship so she is now afraid of love. She unexpectedly reunites with a man (Chae Jong Hyeop) who had a crush on her in high school who is now a financial planner.
Kim So Hyun is Lee Hong Ju. She is an animation producer who doesn’t want to get into a relationship due to a bad break up. Things start to change though when she reunites with an old friend from high school.
Chae Jong Hyeop plays Kang Hu Yeong. He’s a financial planner who had a crush on Hong Ju in high school but tried to put it behind him. His feelings are rekindled when he meets her again and emotions run high.
Serendipity’s Embrace is a pretty basic romantic comedy. It has a simple premise with two high school friends meeting again as adults and having to deal with their feelings. It’s all quite standard.
The main conflict surrounds Hong Ju and Hu Yeong remembering their past and coming to terms with their current feelings. We do have some minor issues surrounding Hong Ju’s ex, her friend, and Hu Yeong’s mom. It’s all pretty laid back though.
Hu Yeong and Hong Ju have a nice relationship overall. We get a lot of flashbacks to them in high school to see what their brief friendship was like and how they bonded. These scenes were woven in well and laid a good foundation for the relationship.
Although the current day interest is there fairly soon, it takes a bit for them to act on their feelings. We explore their issues, deal with potential problems, and begin a relationship. They have some nice conversations and several sweet moments between them.
There is a secondary couple of Hong Ju’s friend, Hye Ji (Kim Da Som), and a gym teacher named Gyeong Taek (Hwang Sung Bin). They add a bit of extra humor to the series. Nothing too crazy, but it’s cute enough.
Overall, Serendipity’s Embrace is pretty run-of-the-mill. The pacing is laid back and nothing particularly exciting happens. The couple is sweet but pretty ordinary. There’s a dash of drama mixed with humor and a bit of heart. I did quite enjoy the soundtrack with this one which was utilized really well.
But the series was on the bland side and not very memorable. At only 8 episodes, it’s good if you want a simple, low-stress watch with a relationship journey at the center and just enough conflict to push things along.
My Rating: 6/10
