Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu and Alice Ke

Someday or One Day is a fantasy romance about a 27 year old woman (Alice Ke) struggling to deal with the death of her boyfriend (Greg Hsu) that gets caught up in a series of mysterious events involving him.

Alice Ke plays Huang Yu Xuan. She loved her boyfriend Wang Quan Sheng dearly and has had a hard time coping with his death even though it has been two years.

Greg Hsu is Wang Quan Sheng. He is Huang Yu Xuan’s loving boyfriend. He was the perfect man for her, and the two shared many wonderful times together.

Well, what do you know, I actually completed my first Taiwanese drama! I’ve started quite a few of them over the years, but I just couldn’t ever get one to stick. This one finally did it though, and it did with a bang!

So, I had never heard of Someday or One Day and watched it completely on a whim after reading a review from the amazing kfangurl of The Fangirl Verdict. I only read the opening paragraphs which actually told me nothing about the plot, but it said that it was an amazing drama and that it was best experienced going in blind and knowing as little about it as possible. So that’s exactly what I did!

Since I primarily watch kdramas and keep up with all the news around them, I pretty much always know a good deal about a drama before I start it. So, it is an interesting experience going in not having a clue about the plot other than that it is a fantasy romance. So much mystery!

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu and Alice Ke

And I can tell you after watching it, it really is the kind of drama where the less you know the better. It completely enriches the experience as you try to figure out what is going on during this emotional journey with the characters.

This is a rich drama with so much going for it. There’s a big romance, bromance, friendship, and family. The story is captivating and executed beautifully. There is also an intriguing mystery element to the show that includes some truly great twists and reveals that I didn’t see coming.

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Alice Ke

The story is so unique and well-written, and I was truly impressed with how well everything ties together to make for an incredibly emotional story that really leaves an impact. This isn’t a flashy drama, but it doesn’t need to be because it executes the story so well. The soundtrack is also fantastic and a great compliment to the show.

So, if you like big romances with fantasy elements, I would recommend like those before me that you stop here and go watch this wonderful drama. Give it a few episodes to get fully set up, and enjoy the amazing journey it takes you on! Everything after this will contain spoilers.

MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW

I was drawn in to Someday or One Day right away. The opening montage had the feels as I met Huang Yu Xuan and Wang Quan Sheng. Then we learn about his disappearance and the difficult time that Huang Yu Xuan has coping with the loss.

The first episode sets up the story nicely as we get some back story and then get a surprising reveal at the end as we learn that over 20 years ago back in 1998 there was a high school girl named Chen Yun Ru who looked just like Huang Yu Xuan as well as a boy named Li Zi Wei who looked just like Wang Quan Sheng. It was a great twist!

Then Huang Yu Xuan gets transported back in time to the body of Chen Yun Ru. That’s where we begin piecing together the puzzle of why these people look alike and what actually happened to Wang Quan Sheng.

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu, Alice Ke, Patrick ShihSomeday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu, Alice Ke, Patrick Shih

I was completely engrossed in the story and so invested in each of our main characters. Watching the relationships play out between our friend group of Chen Yun Ru, Li Zi Wei, and Mo Jun Jie (Patrick Shih) had me glued to my screen. My heart was put through the ringer with this one!

And I have to say how impressed I was at how well the drama handled all of the different timelines. Each one felt meaningful and important to the overall story. It can be hard for time travel dramas to keep up with everything and not feel all over the place, but this one knew what it was doing and where it was going which resulted in everything in the story flowing beautifully even within multiple timelines.

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Alice Ke Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu

I loved how seamlessly the drama shifted from the first half focus being on Huang Yu Xuan and her journey of dealing with losing Wang Quan Sheng to the second half showing his journey to reunite with her.

We get to watch Li Zi Wei travel to the future and inhabit the body of Wang Quang Sheng and then mature and transform into the man that Huang Yu Xuan loved all along. He crossed time for her and put his everything into winning her heart and becoming a truly wonderful boyfriend.

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu

And then the inevitable death of Wang Quan Sheng happens which results in Li Zi Wei being transported back in time to his own body where he has to painstakingly wait for the years to pass so he can reunite with Huang Yu Xuan as himself.

He goes through so much to get back to her. Talk about dedication! It was very rewarding to see the pieces all come together, and the feels were off the charts!

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Patrick Shih

He also goes through a lot involving his best friend Mo Jun Jie. Mo Jun Jie may just be the embodiment of everything a second lead is supposed to be and more. What this sweet man goes through was something else.

His relationship with Li Zi Wei as well as Chen Yun Ru was very deep. Their story is a fantastic one that caused me a lot of grief because of the heartbreaking way things played out. It was an emotional ride.

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu and Alice Ke

We finally get the big reunion between our lovers in the present day, and it was wonderful to see. They went through so much to get to that point. Sadly though, tragedy strikes again with the unexpected murder of Li Zi Wei by our very creepy villain which sends Huang Yu Xian on a mission to save him as she goes back to the past again.

That’s where the big mystery of Chen Yun Ru’s death plays out. The drama did well at finally giving us another look at the character of Chen Yun Ru and how all of this affected her as well as those around her. Again, I was amazed at how well everything came together. We get all of the answers and eventually see the tragic loop of events unfold. It was devastating to see play out.

But thankfully, Huang Yu Xian is eventually able to change the past which ultimately resets the timeline so the loop doesn’t happen. Saving Chen Yun Ru changes everything though, including how she and Li Zi Wei met.

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu and Alice Ke

As for the ending, I kind of would have liked for it to have been possible for them to have retained the memories of everything they went through in order for them to be together. It was just such an epic journey that it felt like it should be remembered.

But I also liked the route they went in that Huang Yu Xuan and Li Zi Wei were able to live normal lives and eventually meet as themselves. They avoided tragedy and still fell in love. So in that sense, it was a very happy ending for our characters. Wow, what an emotional rollercoaster that was! I loved every single minute of it!

END OF SPOILERS

Someday or One Day Taiwanese Drama - Greg Hsu and Alice Ke

Someday or One Day was truly something special. It pulled me in right from the start, captured my heart, and never let it go. I was so invested in these characters and their love story as well as their lives. I laughed and cried right along with them on their grand journey to simply be with each other. It was a heartfelt and emotional ride that I won’t forget.

    Hi Kay…
This seems like a wonderful drama.
I’ve actually watched two Taiwanese dramas that I thoroughly enjoyed! One, I even refused to complete because I don’t want it to end 🙈 🏃🏿‍♀️🏃🏿‍♀️🏃🏿‍♀️ it’s called Mars. Check it out.
I was introduced to Tai dramas during my craze over Boys Over Flowers. After watching the Korean one, I went on to read and watch everything there was about it! And that’s how I landed on my first Taiwanese drama…. Meteor garden, the Tai version of BOF, and girl oh girl… Am glad I did watch it. It’s actually my fav version so far😘 and that’s how I was introduced to my next project, Mars… Two of the stars in Meteor Garden that I dearly wanted to be together starred in it..
And now I have intentions of giving more Tai dramas more attention 😚❤️
Thank you for saying something about Tai dramas😁

      Hi Jermena!
Yes, this really was a wonderful drama in every way. I absolutely loved it! 🙂

Ah, you have watched a couple of classics there. I have both Mars and Meteor Garden on my watch list. After I watched Boys Over Flowers, I learned about all of the different versions. I tried the Japanese version that came before it, but it didn’t stick. I do need to try Meteor Garden still though.

Hopefully, we both find some more great Taiwanese dramas to enjoy 🙂

Sure… Please do share your thoughts on any others you will come across.
About the other versions of BOF, the Japanese one was ok, just I didn’t really get it under my skin, though I really Loved Rui😘, i felt the same with the Korean version. I loved the premise, the hot boys and the whole high school excitement hence my silly craze over it😅, but still i felt the lead couple in the Korean version didn’t have chemistry. It was clear they loved each other very much but I didn’t feel their chemistry together. However, in the Tai version, our lead couple had such incredible chem and I also felt, it stuck most to the manga…
Anyway, when you do watch it, please share your thoughts😚 even Mars 😘

        1. Kay Avatar

I can totally understand that. Boys Over Flowers was only my third kdrama, so I just ate it up and completely loved it, hehe. I hadn’t ever really seen anything like it. And luckily, I did still like it upon re-watch several years later 🙂 The great chemistry between the couple in the Taiwanese version sounds really appealing. That always enhances a drama so much 🙂

Great review, Kay! You managed the tricky of writing about this one very nicely! 😉 Thanks for the lovely shout-out, I’m super pleased that you ended up loving this one so well! 😃 10/10 is high praise indeed! By the way, did you check out the bonus ending that the production team put out? If you didn’t, the link is available in my review! 😊

    1. Kay Avatar

Thank you! ❤ It completely deserves a 10. Not a number I give out a lot (only once all of last year to It’s Okay to Not Be Okay). I’m so glad you reviewed it and said just enough to pique my interest in the beginning that I went and started it the next day after reading it!

And this drama is exactly my style with the heart, feels, great characters, romance, mystery, and anything time travel. And like we’ve talked about, I watch a ton of time travel stories, and it’s so nice to see one execute the story so well including doing it in a fresh and unique way.

Oh yes, I definitely saw the bonus ending! A perfect way to top off an already perfect drama ❤

…yes, the romance between the lead couple was adorable, but you have to watch it yourself and have your say.
You said BOF was your 3rd Kdrama…
    Which was your first kiss😅
I remember mine was Jewel in the palace around 2006/7; that was the first time I was kissed by a Kdrama😚

    1. Kay Avatar

Hehe, my first kdrama kiss was Full House. Had never seen an Asian drama, binge watched it over a weekend, and emerged a new person 😂 Then I watched City Hunter and Boys Over Flowers immediately after that. So I was very happy with my introduction to kdramas 🙂 I still need to see Jewel in the Palace. It sounds like a great first kdrama kiss for you. It’s on that massive watch list of mine, hehe

      1. Jermena Avatar
        Jermena

😁 that was an impressive start in Kdrama land you had right there! Full house has been on my watch list like forever, watched the Filipino version though. And city Hunter… I can only imagine the bliss you experienced😋 such an amazing drama! No wonder you emerged a new person 🤣🤣🤣🤣

And yes, Jewel was captivating. They had a signature ost that av never gotten out of my head to date. When you do watch it, don’t forget to share your thoughts 🤗
On the other hand, Me here having a good time with Healer😍

        1. Kay Avatar

I’ve heard good things about the Filipino version of Full House. Haven’t gotten around to it though. Haha, yes, I definitely experienced bliss after City Hunter. Of course, I absolutely loved Full House, but it is a bit dated and very basic. So having City Hunter right after was mind blowing! It really showed me what kdrmas had to offer 🙂

Oooh, I definitely love a good OST, especially in a historical. It’s like the main song from Empress Ki still pops up in my head years later.

And I can imagine you are having a great time with Healer!! 😍

Hahahaha I already downloaded the main OST from empress Ki and even the fan made video of it between Tal and Nyang😍😘 Still can’t believe those two never had a Love-line. SMH!

*Just Enjoyed PMY’s love confession to JCW about her two unrequited loves😋 Such a beautiful innocent moment….😁
Hope you have a review on Healer!

    1. Kay Avatar

Well, I think you and me both created our own fantasy love line for them 😂

And yes, that confession is a great moment! I do have a review for Healer, but is pretty short and basic and doesn’t really do it justice. It was one of my first reviews, and I like to think I have improved a bit since then 😂

Yay! I’m glad you really enjoyed this one too 🙂 This one is definitely best enjoyed without knowing much going in. The time travel elements were done so well. It looks like we both had a fantastic first Taiwanese drama 🙂

This is probably the most beautiful thing I have seen in a while. I thought it was going to have a sad ending and I was getting ready to be depressed. But even with a sad ending, I was still going to place it in my Top 6 “Kdramas” – the only non-Korean drama on that list. LOL.

This is so beautiful and intriguing. I had so much goosebumps. A perfect, well-executed drama. I have so much I want to say but I can’t. Something as beautiful as this is very hard to explain.

    11/10.

I have only seen 3 Taiwanese dramas: Meteor Garden, Autumn’s Concerto and this. The other two were also amazing albeit old. They may not anymore be as amazing to watch right now. What I can say is that Taiwanese dramas have a different feel from the Kdramas of today. Not saying either is better than the other. I just like that they are a bit different. Hopefully you watch more Taiwanese dramas and discover more gems. This one right here is just the most special Taiwanese gem – yet.

Moving forward, how will you go about the name ‘kdramakisses’? You are not reviewing just kdramas anymore. HAHAHA.

    1. Kay Avatar

Yay! I was hoping you would check this one out since I know you’re always on the look out for those “big” type dramas that pack an emotional punch. And this one sure does!

I know exactly what you mean too. It is so beautiful and amazing that it is impossible to do it justice in words. It’s just so hard to explain what makes a drama like this so magical. It really needs to be experienced.

I have started a lot of Taiwanese dramas over the years, but none of them have ever stuck. Kind of like my difficulties with cdramas and jdramas, though I have completed several of those. But what I thought was interesting about Someday or One Day is that it really did feel like a kdrama to me. A tad more low key maybe, but it terms of story construction, characters, and production, it felt similar. I do hope to find some more good ones. Even though I don’t have near as much success with other Asian dramas, I always stay open to trying them out because you just never know when one will click.

Haha, I actually have 7 non-kdramas reviewed on the site now, going back quite a few years (even one of my site banners is from a cdrama 😲, hehe). But hopefully since the blog is 99% kdramas, the name Kdrama Kisses will be safe to use 😂😂😂

      1. Fred Avatar
        Fred

Yes, that low key feel made me love this so much. Thank you for describing this drama for me! That “lowkey-ness” was what made this drama feel a bit different – in a good way of course. Although I have mentioned that I love “fireworks” and “explosions” that have come to define kdramas, it is nice to watch some low key dramas every now and then. Makes them feel more special. 🙂

Now back to the fireworks. I’m waiting for the next ’10’ Kay. HAHA.

        1. Kay Avatar

That’s one of the many many things that really impressed me about this drama. Even with that low key sort of feel, it also felt very big and epic at the same time. That is sooo hard to pull off! Especially for me since I am definitely someone who likes the fireworks, hehe 😂 But this one didn’t need it. It knew what it was doing and executed it to perfection.

I’ll be anxiously awaiting my next 10 too! Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long 😂

So happy I gave this one a try! One of the best dramas I have seen. I am still not sure about the bad guy (older brother? younger brother in older brother’s body?) but I think I understood everything else. Great romance and bromance.

    1. Kay Avatar

I’m so happy you gave this one a try, and I loved it too! It is also one of the best I have seen. Yes, the romance and the bromance are great in this drama. Everything else is too! It was just wonderful on every level 🙂 And yes, the younger brother went back into the older brother’s body (and then proceeded to sort of groom himself as a child…very creepy!)

Now it’s time for bed. This one looks like there’s going to be a lot of emotional investment in it. Too intense for binge watching. Tom

I’m writing this before reading anyone’s reviews. I have watched several Taiwan shows and have been disappointed with the production quality compared to shows from Korea and China. I was glad to see better production and acting quality with this show.
Ke Jia Yan (Huang Yu Xuan | Chen Yun Ru) was excellent.

The story was hard to follow, which I blame in part in the translation from Chinese to English. But with being said the ending was confusing. Did she stay in the past? What happened? Hopefully reading Kay’s and others’ reviews will clear it up.

I too was very happy with the production quality of this drama 🙂

I do know what you mean though. There is a lot to unpack with this drama. So many things going on from start to finish with lots of little details. A second watch really pulls all of those details together with a drama like this. It’s practically impossible to catch everything the first time around.

I hope the review cleared up some of the details and the ending 🙂
