Korean Drama Update for May 2020

To Jenny Korean Drama - Kim Sung Chul and Jung Chae Yeon

I got in another two dramas for May with them both being great watches. One was the melancholy romance Find Me in Your Memory and the other was the super cute mini drama To. Jenny:

Find Me in Your Memory

Find Me in Your Memory really was such a nice surprise, and I really enjoyed it. It had all of the ingredients I tend to like in a drama with a romance, a good back story that has lots of affects on the present happenings, a good mix of humor and serious, and some very engaging and emotional character journeys.

Kim Dong Wook and Moon Ga Young also had some really fantastic chemistry as well as such a naturalness and ease with each other. Their romance as a whole was very touching.

I loved the whole feel of the drama with its melancholy atmosphere. It was a romance that had a mixture of melo, humor, and thrills that all came together very nicely. I’m so glad I took a chance on this one and was able to enjoy such a well done story. (Find Me in Your Memory Review)

To. Jenny

To. Jenny is a two episode mini drama is like a ray of sunshine packed with romantic feels. It’s light, fun, and just all around sweet. The pacing is swift but doesn’t feel rushed. We watch the adorably awkward Jung Min pursue Na Ra and do what he can to help further her music career. Their story was simple, but it was done well and was very engaging. And there are plenty of super cute moments between this pair.

To. Jenny was such a nice watch. It’s s a short and simple drama with a lovely story that is mostly light but has depth. It’s super cute and perfect for a quick shot of feels and lots of heart. (To. Jenny Review)

Dramas I finished in May 2020:

At Eighteen – a beautiful coming of age drama. Very sweet and nostalgic, but does not sugarcoat the problems many high school kids face. Excellent writing and acting, a true gem.

When the Devil Calls Your Name – a brilliant performance by Jung Kyung Ho as a conflicted celebrity musician. He really excels at playing eccentric characters. His chemistry with co-star Park Sung Woong is outstanding. A thought provoking drama about creativity and fame. Memorable musical numbers, many of them performed by JKH himself.

Gu Family Book – a classic fairy tale about a guileless hero who finds his true self with the help of a feisty heroine and a bunch of wise old guys. Lee Seung Gi is very charming in the main role, and Yoo Yeon Seok in hanbok is an added bonus!

Hospital Playlist (Season 1) – slice of life drama about 5 doctors who work at the same hospital and who had been friends since college. A nice mix of heart-warming and heart-breaking moments. Since this was only the first season, it is too early to say if the romantic pairings (or lack thereof) are satisfying. Acting and directing are excellent, but the pace may be too slow for some viewers.

Bing Goo (Ice Mound, Frozen Love) – what a sweet little surprise! I was looking at Kim Jung Hyun’s filmography, and stumbled across this mini drama (2 episodes). It tells the story of an artistic young man who wakes up in 2016 after being magically frozen in 1979. He sets on a journey to find the woman he loved back in 1979. A friendly and somewhat cynical bank clerk helps him along the way. If you are in a mood for a sweet and romantic drama with a vintage flair, this is the drama for you!

Well, I didn’t watch anything Korean all month. In fact, I didn’t watch anything much at all. ☺ The only drama I managed to take on was Ancient Detective, which I really liked. After that, nothing seemed to beacon.

  At least Ancient Detective was a good one for you 🙂 It can definitely be hard following up a good one with something else. Sometimes things don’t seem that appealing or click after that. Hopefully, you find a new one soon though 🙂

(My May 2020 K-Dramatic Reviews)
“A-May-zing Marathon”

1. 365: Repeat the Year
A never-resting suspense thriller with twist of fantasy, having a unique time-travel as its theme. With its great actors and their great portrayal and good scripts brought us to a roller-coaster suspense thriller that requires you to literally use your brain.

Rating: 8.5/10

2. Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim 2
Second installment of the phenomenal Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 1 last 2017. With its amazing writing and story flow, the author really highlighted every character in the drama. And I loved it! It was as heartwarming and as amazing as its first season.

Rating: 9/10

3. Another Oh Hae Young [re-rewatch]
Watched it for the third time. And I laughed my brain out, I cried my soul out, and I felt so amazingly great with every single thing about this drama. So far, since 2017 my best K-drama. 😍

Rating: 10+/10

4. When the Weather is Fine
Just a simple drama with nothing really special, but just pure characters you could connect with and root for. Amazingly simply written but very beautiful. It really is true that sometimes nothing special is really special.

Rating: 9/10

5. World of the Married
Personally, not the kinds of drama I’d love to recommend to my friends. Objectively, it is a drama that has a lot of things to offer and enjoy – melodrama, romance, family, affairs, revenge and ultimate search for happiness. Indeed, no doubt why it internationally hit big.

Rating: 6.5/10

6. A Piece of Your Mind
A mini-series with lead characters you wanna be happy. Since the drama does not have that strong plot, it might be very very slow at times. But still, they made it decent enough.

Rating: 6/10

My Favorites this Month: Another Oh Hae Young, Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2, When the Weather is Fine

My K-Movie Reviews:

1. Train to Busan [re-rewatch]
Watched it multiple times, but still had the same amazing and fulfilling vibes I’ve got everytime. Such a wonderfully-made epic film.
‘Twas heartwrenching, and thrilling. But more than just zombies, it has heart and life lessons in it.

Rating: 10/10

2. The Flu [rewatch]
I happened to watch this movie again, so as to relate with what the world and its people are actually experiencing these days (COVID Outbreak). It had an amazing casts with many tearjerking scenes, and showcasing of an eternal love of a mother to his daughter. Indeed, a relatable movie with many characters you could connect with.

Rating: 9/10

3. A Taxi Driver
A sensitive movie set in the year 1980. While the drama had boring parts for me, those gunshots awakened me. 😃 And I commend the writer for utilizing a profession and making it such a useful and life-changing job – our Taxi Drivers. Indeed, this movie deserved all its awards.

Rating: 7.5/10

4. Exit
An unexpected surprising movie! I could feel many emotions while watching it. And that’s something very special about it. With its great casts and pacing, this movie is quite an epic.

Rating: 8.5/10

5. Confidential Assignment
An action-packed film with a great casts (Hyun Bin 😍 in it is I think more than enough to give this movie a look) and a great villain. And a showcase of an uncommon camarederie of two strangers teamed for a similar goal.

Rating: 6.5/10
