109 Strange Things Korean Drama - Choi Tae Joon and Jung Chae Yeon

109 Strange Things is a 6 episode web drama about a robot (Choi Tae Joon) who comes from the future with a mission to protect a philosophy student (Jung Chae Yeon) struggling to land a job.  The two bond as he helps her find answers in life.

I was just looking for a quick filler drama and decided to pick up 109 Strange Things.  It’s short episode count only required a couple hours of viewing time. I don’t tend to go in to little dramas like this with much expectation, and that was probably a good thing with this one.

They kind of tried to cram a full length kdrama style plot into this short story with not so great results. There’s a little of everything: romance, family issues, people struggling to find jobs, a robot on a mission, and even some villains. There was just too much going on. This created a bunch of stories that didn’t get much screen time. So nothing felt really developed, and the story was very choppy. It posed a few thoughtful questions regarding robots and humans, but there wasn’t time to really address them.

Like I said, I don’t tend to expect much with web dramas, but I have seen plenty of short dramas and movies that are able to bring to life a story in a meaningful and more coherent way. It can be done, it just needs better focus, direction, and writing.

109 Strange Things Korean Drama - Choi Tae Joon and Jung Chae Yeon

The romance portion between Choi Tae Joon and Jung Chae Yeon was cute enough. If you just want to watch a few sweet scenes between this duo without needing a huge time investment, this drama could be an okay time killer. Both actors are good and worked with what they had.

But overall, 109 Strange Things is cheesy, sloppy, and under developed. It has some cute moments here and there, but otherwise it is pretty lacking.

My Rating: 4/10
