Short follows the story of an up and coming short track speed skater (Kang Tae Oh) with no training and a man (Yeo Hoe Hyun) who is known as the King of Short Track Speed Skating and is at the top of the sport. As the two train together, they develop a rivalry and a friendship.
While the title of this review may have had you thinking I was just doing a “short” review on some random drama I forgot to name, it really is the name of the drama I’m reviewing. Although, I do guess this review is a bit shorter than most of my others, but hey, a short review for a short drama named Short. Sound good? 🙂
The 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics has been taking up a lot of my time these past couple weeks, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying them. And what better way to get into the Olympic spirit than to watch a kdrama featuring an Olympic sport!
I hadn’t heard about the 4 episode speed skating drama Short when I noticed it pop up on Viki. And since I really enjoy short track speed skating anyways, I was excited to give it a try.
Short is a simple drama, but overall very enjoyable. We see two very different men who got where they are through very different circumstances. We learn their stories and see their struggles. They have a rivalry between them, but that slowly begins to change as they train together. Although there are plenty of things that stand in their way. Both of our lead actors, Kang Tae Oh and Yeo Hoe Hyun, were great in their roles.
Of course, the drama features a little window into the sport of short track speed skating. I liked the scenes that depicted the sport and some of what goes into it. I personally wish they would have spent more time on this and showed more competitions and such. But if you’re not a big fan of sports themed shows, then this is a big plus since sports in no way takes over the drama.
There are plenty of other things going on with some nice little side stories to round things out. I enjoyed watching the boys outside of the ice rink and dealing with personal issues as well as having fun. The drama had this very low key and realistic feeling to it with a nice atmosphere.
So if you’re looking for something short and sweet with friendship, rivalry, and a side of speed skating, definitely give Short a try.
My Rating: 7/10
