We have a bit of a casting change up for the new MBC drama Rebel Hong Gil Dong. It was recently reported that an offer was out to Nam Goong Min (Beautiful Gong Shim) for a lead role, and it was assumed that it was for the Hong Gil Dong character. But it has now been revealed that an offer has went out to Ji Sung (Entertainer) for the leading character of Hong Gil Dong. Nam Goong Min’s role was apparently only specified as a lead role, but he is still in the mix.
Honey Lee (Come Back Ahjussi) has also been offered the lead role of a royal consort to the crazy and tyrannical King Yeonsangun. She will be involved in a love triangle with
the King and her first love, the Hong Gil Dong character.
So maybe Nam Goong Min has been offered the role of the King? I was excited at the prospect of him playing the vigilante Hong Gil Dong, but I can’t say I’m disappointed at the idea of him playing the mad King. I can definitely see that.
I also love the possibility of Ji Sung signing on for the title role. But he was also previously offered a role in the thriller drama Defendant which he is still considering. Both dramas seem interesting, so it’s hard to say which one I would rather him take.
So far, I’m loving everything about the story and set up for Rebel Hong Gil Dong, and if all of these actors were to sign on, we would have one seriously talented and amazing cast. Here’s hoping everything falls into place!
Rebel Hong Gil Dong is based on the classic Korean folktale about a man born to a nobleman and a concubine who becomes the leader of an outlaw group who steals from the rich to give to the poor. The drama comes from the writer of King’s Daughter Soo Baek Hyang and the PD of Kill Me, Heal Me.
Rebel Hong Gil Dong is looking to air in early 2017 on MBC.
