Ratings Gap Widens for Korean Dramas Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Goryeo and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

The gap is widening in the ratings battle between Monday-Tuesday dramas Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Goryeo and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds. Moonlight Drawn By Clouds had another ratings increase and kept a solid lead by bringing in 19.3% for episode 5 on Monday. Episode 6 on Tuesday brought in 18.8%.

Melodrama Monster held strong in second place with 10.8% on Monday and 10.3 on Tuesday.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Goryeo again came in last place as it saw another drop to 5.7% for episode 4 on Monday. Tuesday it reached 6% with episode 5.

I already feel so sad for Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Goryeo. I definitely want Moonlight Drawn By Clouds to do well too, but it’s such a disappointment to see Scarlet Heart with such low ratings.

It’s starting to look like the only chance for it to really gain some momentum is after Monster ends in a few weeks and Woman With a Suitcase comes on to the scene. We will all just have to wait and see how this very interesting ratings game plays out.

I find these ratings really hard to understand. Years ago, when I watched American broadcast TV, I sometimes had two shows that I wanted to see airing at the same time. I would usually record the one that I thought I would like most so I could watch and maybe re-watch later. I wonder if Koreans do that. If they do, is there any way the ratings can know about shows recorded for later watching? Are ratings still determined the way they used to be with sample households watching habits being monitored?

  Nielsen is a popular ratings company in the US and Korea. They still use the sample households for their measurement, and they do track data from DVRs. The most common number used is the Live + Same day total. They also measure Live + 3 days and Live + 7 days, but those aren’t used as much. Some networks in the US are starting to also include their streaming platforms with the Nielsen numbers. I’ve never loved the rating system as it can obviously have plenty of errors. But the Live + Same day still seems to be the standard as it does usually reflect the general popularity of shows.

    Thanks for that info. It actually makes it harder for me to understand Scarlet Heart’s low ratings. It is a wonderful show and doing really well in China and other parts of Asia. What is wrong with Koreans? HAHA

      It is hard to understand! Like you said, Scarlet Heart is a hit in China and is being mostly received positively. It’s one of those times that I feel like it just ended up airing against the wrong drama. If Moonlight was just getting above average ratings, it would leave some room for it.
      
      It’s kind of like Beautiful Mind and Doctors. While I will concede that Doctors is probably more towards Korea’s taste, Beautiful Mind was a solid drama and had it gone against “normally rated” dramas, it probably would have got around 7-8%. Come Back Ahjussi was another victim of being up against the huge hit of DOTS.
      
      Monster has had a pretty dedicated fan base keeping it around 10%, so maybe some of those viewers will shift towards Scarlet Heart soon. Of course, they could go to Moonlight too. I just really hope Scarlet Heart is at least able to pull itself up to around 8% or so.
