August was an interesting month as I watched the comedy drama Undercover Boss, the modern monarchy romance Perfect Crown, and the romantic comedy Yumi’s Cells 3. Here’s how they went:
Undercover Miss Hong
Undercover Miss Hong is definitely not my typical kind of drama on paper with its story centering around financial corruption at a company. It’s an office drama with business politics. But its lighter take on an undercover investigation infused with humor, heart, and quirky characters really clicked with me and made for a delightfully fun drama. I also loved the 90s setting as well as the fun OST.
I really love seeing a drama be able to take a subject matter that I’m not as into and make it engaging. It leaned fun and comedic but also delivered a dash of suspense and some heartfelt emotional topics. I was genuinely interested to see how Geum Bo would uncover corruption at Hanmin and even felt genuinely invested in the company’s future. It was a thoroughly enjoyable drama all the way through. Perfect Crown
Perfect Crown was a mostly solid drama. It has many things it does well, but also has some shortcomings. I love modern dramas that incorporate a monarchy. It really gives it this sort of modern historical vibe which is a lot of fun. The story itself is well done and intriguing. There are a lot of interesting characters from the heroes to the villains. The drama also features lovely cinematography with beautiful sets and gorgeous costumes. IU also gives a great performance.
But the drama felt rushed and never took time to go deep with the characters or the plot. It really needed more time to flesh out such a complex story. So while I definitely enjoyed it, I couldn’t help but see what it was missing and how it could have been truly amazing. (Perfect Crown Review)
Yumi’s Cells 3
Yumi’s Cells 3 was a decent watch. I would say this type of drama is not my ideal genre with its very basic and realistic dating plot, but it’s solid enough. It really just centers around the developing relationship between Yumi and Sun Rok. I did struggle some with each of them individually and as a couple though.
I definitely liked the previous two seasons better which showed more fleshed out relationships and had more to the plot. But the show is simple and cute with a heartfelt approach to the awkwardness of dating, and at least it was a decent wrap up for Yumi’s story. (Yumi’s Cells 3 Review)
