Korean Drama Update for May 2026

For the month of May, I enjoyed the mystery romance Idol I, the modern rom-com Boyfriend on Demand, and the Chinese romance The Prisoner of Beauty. Here’s how they went:

Idol I

Idol I Korean Drama - Kim Jae Young and Sooyoung

Idol I was a solid and enjoyable drama. It has a couple of compelling characters with a decent whodunnit mystery at its center. Overall, it’s paced really good with consistent plot developments that further the story. Much of the story focuses on who committed the murder that La Ik is charged with as well as his and Se Na’s journeys both individually and as a pair. It also addresses issues within the entertainment industry and toxic fan culture.

I do think it could have supported more episodes so that we could have fleshed out some of our supporting characters a bit more. All in all, Idol I was a really good watch though. It didn’t try to do too much which resulted in it doing what it did do very well. It was engaging with mystery and a helping of heart. (Idol I Review)

Boyfriend on Demand

Boyfriend on Demand is a fun romantic comedy with a bit of a more novel premise that really fits with themes of our time as it centers around the concept of virtual dating. The show is pretty straightforward in its plot as we go along with Mi Rae on her journey in the world of virtual boyfriends and how that impacts dating in the real world.

Boyfriend on Demand is a mostly light and fun drama. It touched upon some interesting concepts that are more unique in nature. It also featured a slow to start but sweet romance. It’s a fairly simple show, but it executes things well at a breezy pace. With just 10 episodes, it makes for a nice, quick watch. (Boyfriend on Demand Review)

The Prisoner of Beauty

Prisoner of Beauty Chinese Drama - Liu Yu Ning and Song Zu Er

I have to say that I really loved The Prisoner of Beauty! I was pulled in right from the first episode and was so intrigued to see the story play out. It really set up the stakes involved with the marriage alliance between the clans, and that tension is carried throughout the entire drama.

The story was fantastic and really had it all with romance, family, friendship, humor, heart, action, war, and politics. It had great pacing with gorgeous cinematography. The characters were interesting, and the cast delivered amazing performances.

I was never bored, and had a great time from start to finish. I just loved this story and the world that it was set in. The romance was satisfying as were the myriad of relationships. Overall, The Prisoner of Beauty was a truly wonderful drama, and I was so sad to see it end. (The Prisoner of Beauty Review)

    Kdramas Finished:

Yumi Cells 3 – cute ending to the 3 season drama. Personally, I don’t think those 2 characters will make it long term (personalities are too different) but as a cute rom com it fit the bill.

Perfect Crown – had all the right pieces but I didn’t like that IU’s character seemed too unlikeable for too much of the series and felt too indifferent to the ML for too long. BWS was the perfect puppy and all of the side characters were great. I did enjoy it/ it was entertaining but something was missing that would have made this the perfect 5 star re-watch for me.

Sold Out on You – Solid run of the mill rom com, not too fluffy, in the vein of The Potato Lab and Brewing Love. If you liked those, you’ll like Sold out on You.

Dropped Wonderfools – it’s just not my genre although I keep seeing rave reviews about it online.

    Cdramas finished:

Our Generation – Full of angst. Very good story but apparently they edited a 40 episode drama into 24 episodes and the series ended just when it felt like it started to get interesting. They pretty much showed her side of the story in full and gave his side of the story short shrift when his side was so much more interesting. Too bad. ZLH gave an amazing performance. Wish he could have been given more scenes.

Put Your Head on My Shoulder and Ski Into Love – both good run of the mill, enjoyable, entertaining HEA rom coms.

Love in the Clouds – my first Xianxia. Loved it from beginning to end. This is not my favorite genre but there seem to be a lot on the highly recommended list of cdramas that are in this genre so I will definitely watch more of them.

A good looking month! Yumi’s Cells and Perfect Crown are on my list. Might check out WONDERfools.

I actually do have Put Your Head On My Shoulder as one of my completed cdramas from back in 2022. It was basic but cute 😊

Congrats on completing your first Xianxia! I have tried soooo many over the last 10+ years and just haven’t been able to get any to stick. Which it painful because like you said, there are so many that are highly recommended. I just don’t think the genre works for me for some reason 😞
