Anna Korean Drama Review

Anna is about a woman (Suzy) who tells a small lie and ends up constantly lying as she lives the glamorous life of someone else where she eventually finds herself in danger.

Suzy plays Lee Yu Mi/Lee Anna. After going through difficult circumstances, she tells a lie that leads to a chain reaction of other lies. This takes her from a life of hardship to one of wealth. But life gets very complicated as her lies catch up to her.

Jung Eun Chae is Lee Hyun Joo. She is a wealthy woman that Anna works for and eventually has her identity stolen by her.

Then we have Park Ye Young as Han Ji Won. She is a friend of Anna’s from college who eventually becomes a reporter.

I decided to check out the drama Anna purely because I’m a fan of Suzy. I knew it didn’t look like the type of show I typically go for, and after watching it, it really isn’t. That being said, I did like it okay despite not being my preferred style.

I would describe Anna as moody and somber with a slow build-up of tension as the drama progresses. We watch the difficulties of Yu Mi’s life when she was younger and then the challenges she faced as a teenager. In the midst of those struggles, she goes along with a lie which changes the course of her life.

Her life of poverty and hardship is slowly transformed into one of wealth and privilege as she takes on the identity of Anna. Of course, this new life of hers requires more and more lies to keep going.

The show spends a lot of time slowly moving through each scene as we follow Anna. This is where things felt a little slow for me at times, but this also is what builds tension over time. It definitely feels uncomfortable watching Anna constantly lie and get herself into a variety of situations. And we just know that eventually this is going to catch up to her.

The suspense elements of the drama definitely pick up in the latter episodes as everything comes to a head from Anna’s lies to huge issues that affect the entire country.

For me, Suzy completely carries this drama. The show already primarily centers around the character of Anna with everyone else having relatively small parts. So, Suzy gets a lot of screen time as the main focus. Suzy is fantastic in the role, and I found her captivating to watch as she delivered a subtly nuanced performance for what I would consider a challenging character.

Now, I did watch the director’s cut of this drama which is 8 episodes compared to the 6 episodes of the main version. I would recommend the longer director’s cut. Despite the overall slow nature of the drama, I feel like the story is already condensed, and the scenes included are needed for everything to make sense. From the reactions of other fans, I gather many felt the main version was a bit more confusing and lacking.

Anna Korean Drama - Suzy

Overall, Anna a decent watch. Not being a preferred genre of mine did make it feel a little too slow and moody, but it had enough good elements that I liked it for the most part. And Suzy’s performance was well worth the watch.

My Rating: 6.5/10
