Check Out the Event is a 4 episode romance drama about an upbeat curator at a botanical garden (Minah) whose boyfriend (Kwon Hwa Woon) in an indie rock band recently broke up with her. In order to go on a couples only trip, the two have to pretend to be a real couple again.
Minah plays Ha Song Yi who is a curator at a botanical garden. She is left devastated after her boyfriend suddenly breaks up with her and tries her best to win him back. She sees an unexpected chance to go to Jeju Island an opportunity to regain their relationship.
Kwan Hwa Woon is Park Do Kyum. He is in a band and decides to break up with Song Yi out of the blue. He appears cold to her, but it is obvious there is more to the story as to the real reason he broke up with her.
Finally, we have Ahn Woo Yeon as Seo Ji Gang. He is the tour guide for the couples trip and ends up right in the middle of Song Yi and Do Kyum’s issues when he develops feelings for Song Yi.
I was looking for something quick and easy so I decided to go for Check Out the Event since it is only 4 episodes. The drama is pretty basic with a simple plot, but it is very easy to watch.
There’s a mix of humor and serious going on in this romance as we see Song Yi get dumped by Do Kyum and go through a lot of anguish. But then the pair have to pretend to be a couple again to go on a trip they won to Jeju Island. Awkwardness ensues. A pretty good chunk of the drama just involves Song Yi and Do Kyum going around in circles with her asking why he broke up with her and him not really saying.
So that poses the question of why exactly did Do Kyum dump Song Yi? A dash of mystery to spice things up! Honestly, it’s not the greatest reason, but I thought it was a pretty standard kdrama type reason. It’s definitely nothing grand though.
There are some other elements to the story too. We get a bit of a love triangle with tour guide Ji Gang falling for Song Yi. He’s a really nice guy who goes out of his way to help her. We also have two other couples who go on the trip, and each gets their own little story to beef up the plot a bit.
An added bonus to the series is that the Jeju island scenery is very pretty. There are lots of lovely scenic shots to enjoy of this beautiful place. So, the drama is always very nice to look at.
Check Out the Event was a simple drama. It’s not all that engaging, and I didn’t really get invested in any of the characters, but I thought it managed to do well enough with its 4 episodes and tell a decent little story in that short amount of time.
My Rating: 6/10
