August is over, and it has been a average month drama wise. Of course, not every month can be fabulous. I had some disappointments, but also had some pleasant surprises. Here are the dramas that succeeded and the dramas that failed. I completed four dramas this month, one currently airing, two classics, and one mini drama:
Mask
I was a bit underwhelmed by Mask. There was a lot of hype surrounding it, and I was ready for some over the top melodrama. For me, it didn’t quite live up to the excitement that the rest of the fandom seemed to be experiencing. It took about six episodes for me to even get into the drama. After that, Mask was interesting, but I failed to connect with any of the characters on a deep level. Although I did enjoy some of the couple moments later on. It always felt like this drama should be amazing, but it seemed to lack something. So overall, it was a decent watch, but something I probably will not be revisiting. (Mask Full Review)
Playful Kiss
I have had this drama on my watch list for a while now, and I finally got around to watching it! The drama was light and cute with a pleasant feel to it. Jung So Min was adorable as Oh Ha Ni. The faces she made were hilarious, and she truly was the highlight of the drama. Baek Sung Jo was pretty cold and emotionless for the bulk of the drama, although I certainly enjoyed the little moments where he let his feelings show through. It was also nice to see our characters go through high school and college together over a several year period. Don’t expect anything grand or different with Playful Kiss, but just enjoy the laid back feel and the little world it creates for you to experience. (Playful Kiss Full Review)
School 2013
Basically, I was very disappointed with School 2013. It is an extremely popular drama that I had only heard rave reviews for, and I was also looking forward to the much talked about “bromance” between Nam Soon and Heung Soo. I felt that the drama focused too much on the teachers and school politics. It really saddens me that Nam Soon and Heung Soo had so little screen time. I was completely invested when they were on screen, and they were simply amazing. But for the bulk of the drama I was so bored. The amazingness of Nam Soon and Heung Soo simply wasn’t enough to overshadow the flaws in the drama for me. Hopefully, you are in the majority, and you enjoyed this drama. (School 2013 Full Review)
Kang Goo’s Story
This two episode mini melodrama packed a lot into the small amount of time it had to work with. It had a sort of melancholy feel to it, but moments of hope helped to lighten the mood. This drama had gorgeous visuals throughout, which added a nice backdrop to our ill fated love story. Lee Dong Wook was wonderful as Kyung Tae, and it was amazing to watch him step up to take care of his deceased friend’s family. Overall, it was an enjoyable drama, but make sure to have the tissues handy! (Kang Goo’s Story Full Review)
