The Prisoner of Beauty follows the story of a marriage alliance between rival clans with a long history of bad blood. An intelligent woman (Song Zu Er) from the Qiao clan marries the cold leader (Liu Yu Ning) of the Wei clan, and the two face their complicated history, distrust, family difficulties, and issues threatening the land around them.

Song Zu Er plays Xiao Qiao of the Qiao clan and is the granddaughter of the leader of her clan. She enters into an arranged marriage with the Wei clan in order to bring peace after a betrayal years ago put them at odds.

Liu Yu Ning is Wei Shao of the Wei clan. He is the leader of his clan and suffered a lot of trauma after losing several family members because of the Qiao clan’s betrayal. He wants peace but is extremely distrusting of the entire Qiao clan.

Then we have Liu Duan Duan as Wei Yan who is Wei Shao’s cousin and has the reputation of a carefree playboy.

Finally, there is Xuan Lu as Lady Yu Lou who is married to the leader of another clan and has a past connection to the Wei clan.

I have to say that I really loved The Prisoner of Beauty! I was pulled in right from the first episode and was so intrigued to see the story play out. It really set up the stakes involved with the marriage alliance between the clans, and that tension is carried throughout the entire drama.
The story was fantastic and really had it all with romance, family, friendship, humor, heart, action, war, and politics. It went through several different story arcs that were each entertaining. It was great watching the story progress as the characters lived their lives, grew closer, and dealt with a myriad of challenges. The pacing was fantastic and kept me fully engaged all the way through.

I really appreciated how the drama laid out the different clans in their relation to each other as well as their back story. It didn’t overwhelm with too much information and was presented in a very digestible way from the beginning all the way through later on as more complicated dynamics are introduced. I’m not a huge fan of politics in general, but it was done really well here.

The Prisoner of Beauty also has gorgeous cinematography. This is one of those dramas that I just thoroughly enjoyed watching because it was beautiful. It also has lovely costumes and sets that really enhanced the details of the world.

You typically won’t see me praising a slow burn romance, but I really loved the romance here. We do see the sparks of chemistry and feelings fairly early on, and then it grew naturally over the course of the story.
It’s a great enemies-to-lovers tale as Xiao Qiao is extremely smart and uses her skills to win the trust of Wei Shao and the rest of his family. She was incredibly thoughtful and well spoken and knew when to pick her battles. She had an amazing ability to understand the motivations behind everyone around her which allowed her to remain calm and collected as well as have empathy for them.

This especially comes into play involving Wei Shao’s past trauma. At first, he is cold and distrusting in every way. He is very skeptical of Xiao Qiao and doesn’t treat her the best. But Xiao Qiao’s growing understanding of him helps her navigate their marriage and their clans’ delicate alliance.
As their relationship deepens, there are plenty of very satisfying moments As she was able to slowly win his trust and become a partner to him. They had a great chemistry between them. I really enjoyed how the relationship progresses not only romantically but how they become more of a team where Xiao Qiao really is an integral part in helping Wei Shao when very high stakes are involved. It was a very satisfying relationship to watch develop.
END OF SPOILERS

I really enjoyed all of the different story arcs that were included in the drama. Obviously, the romance itself is the main one, but there were a lot of other great ones.
The story involving Wei Lan was very intriguing and added a lot of complexity. He was such an interesting character. The story involving Lady Yu Lou also added a lot of interest.

We also get a really sweet second romance too. Then there’s the escalation of stakes involved as troubles between the multiple clans heat up. There was always so much going on, and I loved it!

There was also a wonderful cast of supporting characters that included Xiao Qiao and Wei Shao’s family and friends. Lots of great villains too. I enjoyed all of the characters and the great performances from the actors that played them.

Overall, The Prisoner of Beauty was a fantastic drama. I was never bored, and had a great time from start to finish. I just loved this story and the world that it was set in. The romance was satisfying as were the myriad of relationships. It was a truly wonderful drama, and I was so sad to see it end.
