Story of Yanxi Palace is about a woman (Wu Jin Yan) who enters the palace as a maid to investigate the truth behind her sister’s death. She faces many hardships as she rises through the ranks to become a concubine.

Wei Ying Luo (Wu Jin Yan) is a kind, intelligent, and strong-willed woman. She is devastated by the murder of her sister, so she enters the palace to find the truth and seek revenge.

Emperor Qianlong (Nie Yuan) is the ruler of the land. He tries to be a good ruler but constantly finds himself in the middle of palace politics and harem disputes.

Empress Xiaoxianchun (Qin Lan) is the wife of Emperor Qianlong. Wei Ying Luo gets close to her during her investigation, and the Empress takes a liking to her and takes her under her wing.

Fuca Fu Heng (Xu Kai) is the Empress’ brother. He is an imperial guard and has known Wei Ying Luo for many years but becomes a suspect in her investigation.

Story of Yanxi Palace has a bit of story that comes with it for me. I actually started this drama way back in early 2020 at a time when I was dropping cdramas left and right. The episode counts were always a deterrent, but for some reason, I decided to throw caution to the wind and start a 70 episode drama!
With my bad luck with cdramas, what on earth was I thinking?! Honestly, I don’t think I was that worried since I figured I would drop it like all of the others and wouldn’t actually be watching 70 episodes. Well, I sure was wrong! I was immediately drawn in and loving it. I made my way through 27 episodes before 2020 got really serious. Life got in the way, and I ended up putting the drama on the back burner.
I thought about picking it back up over the years, but it just never seemed to be the right time. Fast forward to 2026 where I’ve recently enjoyed several cdramas, and I just knew that now was the time to dive back in. And I’m sure glad I did! I was quickly pulled back in and flew through the rest of the drama.

I was drawn to Story of Yanxi Palace since it was more traditional and was known for being soapy. That sounded right up my alley. And it was! There was all kinds of scheming, betrayal, and over-dramatics. I had a fairly easy time getting to know the characters and get a lay of the palace. This meant that I could enjoy the show right off the bat.
Plus, the plot kicks in right away with plenty of stories to pull you in. The pacing for the drama is swift with constant plot developments. Just when one situation gets cleared up, another pops right up to take its place. This worked great for me and kept me constantly engaged.
The drama leans towards the dramatic, but there are moments of levity and fun. I think a lot of cdramas I’ve tried have too much silliness, whereas this one had just the right amount for me. It was sprinkled in nicely rather than detracting from the overall more serious and crazy mood of the show as a whole.

I really loved our heroine here, Wei Ying Luo. She’s determined to find the truth about her sister’s death and get revenge. This girl is very smart and quick-witted. She adapts well to whatever circumstance she is. Of course, people are constantly misjudging her and trying to cause her all sorts of trouble.
But her intelligence always allows her to avert the traps of those out to get her. It was wonderful watching her maneuver her way through all of those situations. Wei Ying Luo isn’t someone who needs rescuing. She will find her own way out of whatever trouble she finds herself in.

I eventually got completely invested in the world of the drama. I enjoyed being immersed in it and was always curious to see what crisis was going to pop up next. And the scheming and plotting is next level here. There was some serious 3D chess going on all throughout. It was really fun seeing all of the different ways that the harem would try to take out their rivals and rise to power.
Palace dramas like these can frequently feel like the plot is circular with everyone picking on the main heroine. And that definitely happens here, but where Story of Yanxi Palace rises above is in how it navigates this. There are some big bads that have a large presence through most of the drama, but they don’t always take the forefront.
Other baddies get involved in the scheming, and when one is defeated, soon enough, another rises up. It really kept things interesting as there were different characters and dynamics bringing unique energies to the story. Plus, it all built upon itself well as we continued to zone in on the bigger villains. It really felt like a journey that had meaning rather than feeling repetitive.

The drama does have romance, but it is a bit different than typical. We have the star-crossed lovers of Wei Ying Luo and Fu Heng who frequently cross paths, but fate seems to be against them. It’s a meaningful relationship that has many impacts on the story, but it isn’t ever a traditional romantic relationship.

Then we have the relationship of Wei Ying Luo with Emperor Qianlong. This is primarily a circumstance where Wei Ying Luo is using him to maneuver herself into a place of power for her revenge. It’s an interesting relationship on many levels. While it’s unconventional with her manipulations, his immense power, and other women in his life from the harem, I really enjoyed seeing the relationship develop.
SPOILERS: The Emperor definitely seems to despise Wei Ying Luo for a long time and slowly moves through all the emotional phases until real feelings emerge. He doesn’t treat well for a while, but as he learns who she truly is, she becomes a valuable partner for him. And by the end, they definitely have a mutual love for each other.
END OF SPOILERS
Again, it’s very unconventional and some might find the harem situation a bit difficult, but if you can embrace it for what it is, it’s an entertaining relationship. I really loved how they interacted and played off of each other. Both actors were phenomenal together.

The Emperor is an incredibly interesting character on his own because of his complexity. He wants to be a good emperor, and for the most part, he is. In the day to day, he also treats the women of the harem pretty well. That being said, he is a man with immense power that he isn’t afraid to yield when necessary. So at times, he will treat those around him harshly.
It’s a mixture of being par for the course for someone of his status combined with being an imperfect human living under the constraints of so much pressure. But for the most part, he’s a decent man trying to do good, and I thoroughly enjoyed the exploration of such a complicated character.

There are a myriad of interesting characters in this drama from the big baddie Consort Xian. Other women in the harem as well as palace maids and eunuchs also have their own stories that are woven into the main one. It was a rich world of characters.

Now, I tend to really enjoy more soapy dramas and don’t really take them too seriously. That being said, Story of Yanxi Palace does deal with some very heavy topics at times. There is a lot of death and suffering in the midst of all of the scheming. It seems like nothing is off limits when it comes to achieving power. So, there are definitely times that things get very emotional and quite sad. Be prepared to experience the full range of emotions with this one.

Of course the drama was beautiful to look at with lovely cinematography too. I loved all of the gorgeous costumes and the lavish palace decor. It was all done so well.

Story of Yanxi Palace was so much fun all the way through. It was an epic tale on so many levels. So many stories were explored in Story of Yanxi Palace. It was interesting watching Wei Ying Luo start at the bottom and slowly work her way up through the ranks of the palace.
There were wonderful characters, amazing performances, and beautiful costumes and sets. I can’t believe I actually completed a 70 episode cdrama and was never bored! It just goes to show, you never know when a drama is going to click despite the odds.
My Rating: 8.5/10
