Royal Secret Agent Korean Drama Review

Royal Secret Agent is about a royal secret agent (L) during the Joseon Era whose job is to spend his nights among the regular people while hiding his identity and then report back to the king the problems they face.

L plays Song I Gyeom. He is an intelligent man but lacks ambition. After he is caught gambling, he is given the position of Royal Secret Agent and sent on a mission by the king to expose corruption and investigate cases.

Kwon Nara is Hong Da In. She joins I Gyeom on his mission to help him, but she has her own reasons for wanting to go along.

Then we have Lee Yi Kyung as Park Chun Sam. He is I Gyeom’s loyal servant who also joins him on the mission.

Royal Secret Agent was an enjoyable series. It has a solid story with a dramatic side as well as a good amount of humor. It has several main arcs involving cases that need to be investigated as well as a main story running throughout the background. The show has a steady pace with consistent plot developments. It kind of has an older vibe that I really liked as well as a simple but wonderful soundtrack.

The show is very character driven with a highlight of the drama being the relationship between our main trio and the camaraderie that they have. They have a lot of comedic interactions between them which really brought a lot of fun to the drama. At the same time, they have a solid friendship that develops where they really support each other through all of the trials they have to face.

I Gyeom and Da In also have individual character journeys to go on. They both have difficult pasts that influence their goals and actions in the present. They grow as people as they begin facing these issues, and they also grow closer together.

A slow burn romance develops between I Gyrom and Da In. They start out with that fun bickering relationship and are then forced to rely on each other through their missions. In the midst of that, they begin to learn about one another. They go through a lot together, and feelings begin to develop. I enjoyed watching them grow as a couple.

There are a several villains in the drama out to cause trouble. They are pretty typical, but the main antagonist, the Chief State Councilor (Son Byung Ho), was entertaining enough.

Royal Secret Agent was an overall fun watch. I would say it’s fairly straight-forward for the most part, but it executes everything very well which makes for a good drama. With a solid story and great performances that make the characters shine, it mixes comedy, action, and drama to make for an entertaining watch.

My Rating: 7.5/10

Yeah, I put it on my list back when it came out but just never got around to it. I’m glad I finally did. It was simple and fun with just enough drama and plot to keep things interesting. I hope you like when you get around to it 😊
