Korean Drama Update for June 2025

The month of June gave me the wonderful healing drama Family By Choice and the emotional slice of life drama When Life Gives You Tangerines. Here’s how it went:

Family By Choice

Family By Choice was such a lovely drama. It’s a healing story of an atypical family unit formed a group of people who have all suffered loss. While slice of life isn’t always a genre I love, this one worked very well for me. It had great pacing all the way through. The relationship developments were satisfying, and reveals were well timed on all fronts.

Family By Choice is one of those dramas that just feels good to be in. I loved the family dinners, the bonding moments between our trio, the bonding moments between the parents and kids, the issues explored, and the healing journeys of everyone involved. The drama has so much heart with a nice balance of humor and serious. I truly enjoyed it all the way through. (Family By Choice Review)

When Life Gives You Tangerines

Whew! When Life Gives You Tangerines was quite the emotional ride. I cried during every single episode of this drama which is not a common occurrence for me. I definitely recommend you bring the tissues for this one. We get a beautifully written story with fleshed out characters that are full of depth. It seems like it tackles all of life’s issues from love to family to poverty to sickness to death and so much more. This is a hard hitting drama that you definitely need to be prepared for.

It’s very much a slice of life series that depicts its characters in very real and relatable ways. The drama centers around the story of Ae Sun throughout the span of her life. This is a story that dives deeply into very real experiences and draws out so much raw emotion. The drama is packed with heart as we experience the ups and downs of Ae Sun and Gwan Sik’s lives from their tumultuous beginning to their tender golden years.

Overall, When Life Gives You Tangerines is a beautiful story of love, family, survival, and finding meaning in the everyday things. It’s the kind of drama that leaves an impact and will stay with you long after you complete it. (When Life Gives You Tangerines Review)

    Watched in June:

Haunted Palace – very good from beginning to end, wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was.

Second Shot at Love – enjoyed until last couple of episodes, still happy ending but the usual dark turn some of these rom coms take in the penultimate episodes is annoying.

Spring of Youth – expected to drop this because I’m getting too old to enjoy high school/college aged dramas but this had a strong back story and the pluckiness of the leads in the face of adversity was worth sticking with. Well executed.

Dear Hongrang – regret watching this! I LOVE Lee Jae Wook which is why I tuned in but the subject matter was NOT what I was expecting and now I can’t get some of the scenes out of my head. Really wish I knew about it before starting.

Squid Game 3 – good wrap up to the story. I have no interest in a US version but would love to see Front Man’s origin story if that ever gets made.

Looks like you had a pretty good month overall 😊 I’m definitely going to check out The Haunted Palace, so I’m glad you liked that one.

I might check out Spring of Youth at some point. I also have Dear Hong Rang on the list.

It’s good that squid game had a good wrap up. I still haven’t checked it out. Even so, I definitely don’t think it needs a US version 🙄
