My Sweet Mobster is a romantic comedy about a kids’ content creator (Han Sun Hwa) and a former gang leader turned CEO (Uhm Tae Goo) who helps ex-convicts released from prison turn their lives around.
Uhm Tae Goo is Seo Ji Hwan. He used to be a gang leader, but he turned his life around and became the CEO of a food company where he helps other ex-convicts. His past causes him troubles in the present though.
Han Sun Hwa plays Go Eun Ha. She is a kids’ content creator with a bright personality, but her career is struggling. She gets involved with Seo Ji Hwan by accident, and her life gets a little more exciting.
Then we have Kwon Yool as Jang Hyun Woo. He is a prosecutor and fan of Eun Ha. A case involving Ji Hwan makes him uncomfortable with his involvement with Eun Ha.
Sadly, My Sweet Mobster is one of those dramas that just didn’t really click with me. It doesn’t do anything terrible, but there were a lot of things that didn’t work. Overall, it’s a lighter romantic comedy that leans heavy on the humor with a side of action.
On the plus side, there’s a lot of fun interactions between Ji Hwan and Eun Ha. There’s also Ji Hwan’s gang to add a bit of humor and comradery. Eun Ha’s relationship with the second lead, Hyun Woo, adds another layer to the plot as well as some conflict. Ji Hwan’s back story and past involvement with gangs creates trouble which gives the drama a little extra excitement at times.
Despite those things, I just wasn’t feeling this one. Most of the humor didn’t work for me, and the gang-related back story was mediocre. The pacing felt slow all the way through with the drama being way too long. There are a few main story arcs, but a lot of time it didn’t feel like much was happening. Everything could have been trimmed way back.
The relationship between Ji Hwan and Eun Ha was really slow to develop. Lots of misunderstandings and a lack of communication. We have a lot of great characters here, but their writing felt flat.
There’s also a big a love triangle involving with Hyun Woo. While the relationship was decent, and I thought the overall progression was nice, it wasn’t particularly engaging, and it goes on way too long.
Now, once things with Ji Hwan and Eun Ha finally get going, they are definitely very cute. Their interactions are playful with some sweet moments.
The drama does improve by the latter third with the couple developments, the gang becoming more humorous, and some main plot points coming to fruition. All of this was definitely nice, but it was too little, too late and not really enough to save the drama for me.
My Sweet Mobster didn’t work for me mostly due to the slow plot that didn’t feel like much was happening. The drama felt bland, but it’s not really bad. It can definitely work for you if you want a lighter romantic comedy that isn’t too serious. There are enough things going on that if it the plot, humor, and characters click with you, this could be very enjoyable. So give it a go, and see what you think.
My Rating: 5.5/10
