Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol is a romantic comedy that follows the romance between a wealthy pianist (Go Ara) who loses everything after her father dies and a mysterious part-time worker (Lee Jae Wook).

Go Ara plays Goo Ra Ra. She is bright, full of life, and a bit naive. After her father suddenly passes away, she is left on her own as she tries to survive. She maintains a cheerful attitude despite her hardships, and she begins to connect with a man who steps in to help her.

Lee Jae Wook is Sun Woo Joon. He is a mysterious man with many part-time jobs that is a bit closed off and withdrawn. He gets caught up with Ra Ra and finds himself wanting to help her and to have her around.

We then have our second lead Cha Eun Seok (Kim Joo Heon). He’s a nice doctor who takes an interest in Ra Ra and also tries to help her out when he can. He has to compete with Joon for her affections though.

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol comes from the writer of one of my favorite dramas, Shopping King Louie, and there are definitely some similarities in terms of the basic plot. Rather than the guy having to survive on his own, this time the girl is the wealthy one forced to survive with no money with the help of a kind man who takes her in.

She has a lovable personality too which helps those around her to like her and want to help her despite her high standards. Then throw in a bunch of fun supporting characters and a darker mystery on the side, and well, they sound almost like the same drama!

This one definitely does not execute everything near as well as Shopping King Louie though. Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol is a pretty straight-forward romantic comedy with a large helping of fluff that progressively gets more serious it goes.

The first half is pretty easy to watch with its bright characters and humorous story. While I do think everyone did well and the characters were fine, for me, Go Ara really carried this drama. She was delightful and so full of life. She lights up any scene she is in. Ra Ra can be a bit clueless at times, but she means well and is so kind. Her fun personality makes her enjoyable to watch.

The rest of the characters are also pretty good, and the interactions between them all are a strong point in the drama. This is the kind of show that relies on its characters and the humor rather than the strength of the plot.

The base plot of Ra Ra surviving on her own with the help of Joon is cute. It takes its time as it explores some of Ra Ra’s challenges as well as her budding romantic relationship with Joon. This duo wasn’t exactly riveting for me, but they did have plenty of sweet moments.

Then we have the second half of the drama. This is where the more serious side becomes more prominent as we deal with who Joon is, why he is so mysterious, and another more serious subplot. Surprisingly, a lot of this is actually resolved pretty quickly about midway through the drama.

And that’s where the problem comes in. Not much really happens after that. Ra Ra and Joon face some challenges, but as a whole, the plot really wanders around between various characters and small happenings. A lot of the charm from the first half of the drama was lost at this point. There is still plenty of humor, but the angst definitely goes up too.

I didn’t so much mind that, but I more so had issues with the overall execution of the angsty side of the drama. And in a rare happening for me, I do actually think this drama has a trash ending that I believe many people will really dislike.

SPOILERS BELOW:

Our couple is separated after Joon’s big secret about him still being a student comes out, and they pretty much stay separated. We lose out on that sweet relationship, and then the angsty part of their story just hobbled along feeling kind of pointless.

Now, I knew going into this drama that people didn’t love the direction it went in or the ending. After not much happening, we get thrown an old school trope in the final stretch of Joon having Leukemia.

While that’s not a favorite trope of mine, that didn’t really bother me. The problem was the extra-long separation of the couple followed by him not telling her he was sick and going off on his own to receive treatment.

Then we get a trash ending where everyone is told Joon died, and they have to mourn for him. Five long years pass as they all try to move on with their lives. Then miraculously after five years, let me repeat, FIVE YEARS, Joon shows back up out of nowhere saying he didn’t want Ra Ra to see him ill all this time.

So, apparently making her and everyone else suffer over his death for the past five years was the best alternative. What?!?! And he just giggles at her for being sad and crying over him.

Yeah, this is an ending that you really have to check your brain at the door for if you want to try and enjoy the happy ending of him being alive and our couple finally getting to be together. That was a trash ending if I ever saw one though!

END OF SPOILERS

So overall, Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol was decent enough. It’s pretty basic as a romantic-comedy that gets more angsty as it goes. It didn’t always feel like a lot was happening, but the story did progress and the characters were appealing to make it a good enough watch.

My Rating: 6/10

Totally agree with your review, Kay. This could have been such a sweet and fluffy drama, with many quirky and loveable supporting characters. The mystery and that late stretch angst clearly had no place in this drama. On the positive side, I liked the music. I also have a new appreciation for Go Ara. And of course, I am now an official Lee Jae Wook fan. I hope his next project is a sageuk.

Yep, it had a lot of promise with such a great cast of characters that were very enjoyable. I too really liked the music in it. And yes, this was really a great role for Go Ara! She was such a ray of sunshine, and I enjoyed her a lot. I usually enjoy angsty last stretches, but this drama just didn’t have a good handle on how to execute it. Really a shame.

Thank you so much for your review! As you know, I started this and was enjoying until I heard there was a questionable ending and figured I’d wait for your review before resuming. You just saved me so much time! Kdramas are such an investment in time and to have a promising one go sideways like that is so disappointing 😑

You’re very welcome 🙂 Yes, I knew you had put this one on hold, and I think it’s a good thing you did! So much promise that just kind of fell flat. You know it’s hard to disappoint me with an ending, but this one sure did! You’ll probably be happier sticking with better dramas than this one.

Good review Kay. I like how you said ‘trash end’. haha for sure. I also had issue with him being a student. I have no issues with age gap at all. But him being a minor had serious issues for me. I enjoyed the drama up to that point. Then it was all a down hill. 🙂 On the other hand, Go Ara was a delight in this one. I really liked Lee Jae Wook prior to this drama. But the selfishness of his character in this drama really made me dislike him. Poor guy – it’s not even his fault. 🙂 I hope he gets a better drama next time. He has so much potential as an actor.

Thank you D 🙂 Haha, yeah, I don’t bust out the “trash ending” term very often, but it definitely fit here 😂 And I completely agree, Go Ara was delightful here while Lee Jae Wook’s character was definitely not written well. His actions were hard to reconcile. Definitely not Lee Jae Wook’s fault though. Yes, let’s hope for a better role for him next time 🙂

I had very similar thoughts with you. The fact of him being a student was definitely new. With my mixed thoughts on this one, I’m not sure how I felt about it.

It does sound like we had a similar experience. I definitely had mixed feelings too. The drama had several things to like about it, particularly it’s great cast of characters, but it sure was lacking in a lot of places.

This is me playing Twenty Fingers from Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol. The show did have problems, but the music was not one of them!

Ah! I always enjoy you’re piano playing 🙂 Such a lovely song, and yes, one of the things the show did get right was the music 🙂

Dang. Now who thought that ending was a good idea?!? 😳🤯 Thanks for the spoilers though! I avoided this one after I heard how awful the ending was, but I didn’t actually know the details until your review. So now I KNOW it was a good idea to sidestep this one..! 😝

Oh yes, you chose correctly in avoiding this one. I thought it was okay, but I think you would like it even less than me, hehe 😬 I too had heard about the awful ending but kept myself unspoiled. And in a rare occurrence, I agreed with everyone and thought the ending was terrible! Worst reason for a time skip and reunion ever! 😂😂😂

To be honest this is a drama that I haven’t watched, and I have no plans to. I read about the ending, and I knew that it was just going to make me mad. So I have no problems not watching this one. Even just reading about this ending from this post frustrates me all over! Haha

Haha, you have solid plans then if you’re not planning on watching this one. And yes, it looks like the ending was so bad that it comes through just in writing! 😂

[…] The second half is more serious and kind of loses its way as the plot really wanders around a lot and includes some angsty developments that aren’t handled very well. Still, Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol was decent. It didn’t always feel like a lot was happening, but the story did progress and the characters were appealing to make it a good enough watch despite some big shortcomings. SPOILERS! Your review Kay was right on. What a crappy ending! It was like the show was originally suppose to end with Sunwoo Joon being dead but then someone in power (producer or production company) said to the writers: You can’t end the show with him dead. So the writers added him coming back. So it takes him 5 years to recover, tells no one he’s still alive and just shows up?

Overall I rate the show 6/10. If I don’t count the terrible ending I would rate it 8/10. Goo Ra-Ra was cute and adorable (maybe even a little too much). The show had many of the same characteristics that many Kdranas have: 1 woman perused by two guys. Group of middle age woman who hang out together, overbearing parents and secondary romances with the supporting characters.

One of the strong points of this show is the music.

It was definitely one of my least favorite endings I’ve seen in a drama. And we all know dramas in general aren’t the best when it comes to endings, hehe 😂

Like you, I thought the drama as a whole had several really good elements, particularly all of the characters and the music. It just wasn’t executed the best and then they added that ending 😲

I did forget the one scene where Sunwoo Joon crashed the wedding and pulls Goo Ra-Ra the bride) out and runs off with her. Reminds me of the American movie The Graduate. Where Dustin Goffman the same thing.

Thank you for pointing out the last episode’s decline. I loved the characters and the storyline up to when he got sick, then it got illogical. I find too many K-romcoms get to the end and get a flat tire. So many I would rewrite the last episode to add a more logical end or add more romance. Just my thoughts.

Thinks definitely turn a major downward turn in the end! Cute story and characters, but it really went wrong. Yes, endings are a challenge for kdramas, but this was one of my least favorites for sure.
