The School Nurse Files Korean Drama Review

The School Nurse Files Korean Drama - Nam Joo Hyuk and Jung Yu Mi

The School Nurse Files is about a quirky school nurse (Jung Yu Mi) who fights a variety of jelly creatures in her school that only she can see with the help of a teacher (Nam Joo Hyuk).

Jung Yu Mi plays Ahn Eun Young. She is a school nurse with the ability to see jelly creatures and can fight them. She has many weapons at her disposal, but the most prominent ones are her light-up sword and BB gun. She does what she can to protect the school and the students.

Nam Joo Hyuk is Hong In Pyo. He is a teacher at the school who has a special aura that protects him. This allows him to team up with Eun Young and help her in her battle to protect the school.

Well, that was…something. I primarily checked out The School Nurse Files out of pure curiosity. I heard it was very weird, and most people loved it or hated it. So, my interest was piqued.

It’s a super easy watch being only 6 episodes, but for me, it really wasn’t to my own personal tastes. Now, I do actually appreciate dramas that are outside of the box, and this show is definitely that. Weird is an understatement to describe it.

The first episode was the best of the series as the weirdness just slaps you across the face.  One strange thing after another is paraded out amidst swift pacing. I wasn’t completely sure what I was watching or that I even liked it, but it was hard to pull my eyes away. The rest of the drama though, just didn’t do it for me, and ended up disappointing.

First, some of the positives for the drama. It is creative and very weird. If you like craziness, this drama has plenty of it. Also, the special effects are fantastic. There are all sorts of jelly creatures at the school, and we get to see lots of them. They are certainly fun. The soundtrack is also fantastic! This was the best part of the drama for me with so many unique and fun songs to enjoy.

The next point can be a positive or a negative depending on taste. The drama is very symbolic and metaphoric with a helping of social commentary. Many of the themes aren’t totally obvious on the surface but rather require some deeper exploration. I usually appreciate symbolism, but not so much in this case.

The surface story and happenings just weren’t coherent enough and didn’t give enough explanation to hold my interest. I understood most of the messaging, but the story creeped along, and I found it quite boring. The main characters are interesting, but I just couldn’t connect with them. The drama mostly felt like a showcase of one weird happening after another with not enough substance in between.

Of course, that was my personal experience. If you enjoy metaphors, weirdness, and fun special effects, this could be a great show for you. Don’t take it too seriously and just go with the flow.

My Rating: 5/10

I didn’t think I’d like this one based on what I’ve been reading. Your review just confirmed it for me. not my cup of tea for sure.

Yeah, it sounded like a love it or hate it kind of drama from what I had heard, and it definitely wasn’t my cup of tea. I can appreciate certain aspects of what it was trying to do, but it just wasn’t to my tastes. And after seeing it, my guess is you wouldn’t really care for it either, so I think you’re making a good decision to pass on it, hehe

Well I really enjoyed the first episode of this weirdest drama of last year.
There were few things that kept me interested, but yeah I agree with you some in-depth explanations could have helped me enjoy it more.
Nonethless it wasn’t entirely a waste. Overall, I give School Nurse Files a 7. 😊

Only watched the first couple of eps and did not find a single thread to follow so dropped it. There are way too many awesome kdramas out there to make it worth it to struggle with those that don’t feed my soul.

Yep, sounds like it wasn’t to either of our tastes. I prefer a much stronger cohesive narrative for the story. It does some interesting things and has a good cast, but it definitely wasn’t my kind of drama.
