It’s Okay to Not Be Okay is a healing romance that tells the story of a troubled health worker (Kim Soo Hyun) at a psychiatric hospital whose fate becomes intertwined with a writer (Seo Ye Ji) with Antisocial Personality Disorder as they fall in love.

Kim Soo Hyun plays Moon Gang Tae who is a health worker at a psychiatric hospital.  His only family is his older Autistic brother who he has spent his life taking care of while neglecting his own needs. He silently struggles through life doing his best. His world is completely turned upside down though when Ko Moon Young blows into his life like a hurricane.

Seo Ye Ji is Ko Moon Young. She keeps the fact that she has Antisocial Personality Disorder hidden and has been able to become a successful children’s writer. She is cold, calculating, and a bit dangerous. She sets her sights on Gang Tae and sets in motion a complicated romance for the pair.

Then we have Oh Jung Sae as Moon Sang Tae. He is Gang Tae’s older brother. His Autism causes him to struggle understanding people and has brought challenges to him and Gang Tae. Even though Gang Tae tends to take care of him, Sang Tae is very loyal, independent, and also wants to do what he can to help Gang Tae too.

Wow! Get ready! This drama is something else! It hooked me right from the start, and then I was glued to my seat all the way through. This is one of those special shows that captures your heart and takes you on an emotional journey that leaves you changed when you are through. Special indeed!

The drama is like a dark, modern fairy tale. It has a magical quality to it in the way the story is told. The script was so incredibly well-written with every line of dialogue having meaning.

A lot of thought also went into the production with so much attention to detail in constructing the sets as well as how the scenes were shot. The OST also greatly enhanced this magical feel. All of these elements blended together beautifully to carry us away into this slightly disturbing yet very healing fairy tale.

Kim Soo Hyun and Seo Ye Ji delivered powerhouse performances, and any time they were on screen together was completely captivating in so many different ways. Their chemistry was palpable. They run very hot and cold with each other which resulted in some incredibly intense moments as well as some deeply emotional ones.

This relationship is a bit disturbing in the beginning as these two clash. Their actions towards each other aren’t always that great. These are two very broken people. But they are drawn to each other, and those walls slowly start coming down between them.

It’s not a linear journey though, and the road is filled many bumps along the way. As they learn and grow in their relationship, healing begins to emerge. We experience a lot of joy and sadness with this couple, but it’s all worth it to watch these two hurting people face their demons and find comfort in each other. I was completely swept up in this amazing romance!

Seo Ye Ji was absolutely phenomenal as Moon Young. She owned this complex character and breathed so much life into her. Moon Young is a unique character in the drama landscape, particularly for a female lead.

Many times she feels quite dangerous as she doesn’t hold back and will take her anger out on those who wrong her. She’s impulsive and says what’s on her mind. Plus, when she sets her mind on something, she won’t back down. That includes her feelings for Gang Tae.

Her actions towards him are quite aggressive as she relentlessly pursues him. Definitely not the recommended way to initiate a relationship. Just reading that, Moon Young may sound like terrible person. But there is far more to her than that.

Underneath that powerful persona is a very hurt and damaged woman that has an incredibly traumatic past.  Learning more about her, how her mind works, and watching her journey of growth was such a treat.

Gang Tae has his own deep-seated issues stemming from his past. He loves his brother dearly and has dedicated his life to taking care of him, but that comes with a cost. His brother has always came first since they were children, and he’s had to bury much of his pain in order to do what is best for Sang Tae.

That has taken an emotional toll on him over the years, and he has to unlearn some of his bad habits. His pain is quite raw to see, and it was evident that he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

When Moon Young comes into his life, he becomes incredibly conflicted as he is forced to fight his feelings for her. It was heartbreaking to watch as he struggled with wanting to do what was best for his brother as well as just take some small enjoyment out of life for himself for a change. He had a lot of growing to do too.

There’s also Sang Tae who faces his own challenges stemming from his Autism as he struggles to understand people and their emotions. A trauma from his past has also made his and Gang Tae’s lives very difficult.

I was thrilled with how this character was handled. Many times in shows, characters with disorders like his are sort of relegated to being a token side character that just impacts the main character. Not so here! Sang Tae is written as a completely fleshed out character that has his own journey to go, is an integral part of the story, and is just as important in every way. Wonderful to see!

Oh Jung Se also really put in a terrific performance as Sang Tae. I was very impressed with him and just how much he brought this character to life and opened a window into his soul.

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay has so many relationships to explore too. I already mentioned the one involving Gang Tae and Moon Young. One that is just as important though is that of the brothers.

Gang Tae and Sang Tae have a complex relationship that is in many ways frozen in time from when they were kids. The dynamic they have between them has remained the same since then.

They love each other dearly but have stayed in their respective roles without growth. This ultimately had a negative effect on their relationship and their lives which resulted in neither of them being able to live their best lives.

Growing as individuals and in the relationship becomes very important for them. I loved seeing how they cared for each other despite some severe challenges to the relationship. And watching them grow closer, understand each other more, and finally progress into a healthier relationship was wonderful.

I could go on and on about all of the amazing relationships featured in this drama. Sang Tae and Moon Young definitely have quite the interesting relationship with each other and is quite fun to watch.

Then we have a wide array of wonderful supporting characters that are explored. There are friendships, romance, parent/child relationships, and more. Suffice to say, everyone in this drama is important, has a story, and is connected to the overall narrative. It was beautifully done.

There’s even some mystery in this series as Moon Young’s past is slowly peeled back as well as the traumatic events from Gang Tae and Sang Tae’s childhood revealed. It added yet another nice layer to this multi-faceted story.

As you can see, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay explores a host of mental health issues and complicated themes. I experienced so many different emotions watching this drama. So much raw pain is dealt with in this story.

Our characters are all very different from each other and have their own issues to deal with, but they all ultimately need the same thing…love and acceptance. Loneliness can be crippling, and that is shown very clearly here. Seeing this unlikely group come together and heal was such a treat. The concept of what a family is was explored in such a touching way.

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay is one of those unique and special thought-provoking dramas that truly is a masterpiece. It tells a heart-wrenching yet beautiful story of growth and healing. The characters are flawed, but we come to understand them and root for their personal growth and happiness. They don’t have to be perfect to achieve that either. Love and acceptance can be found in imperfection. The message is clear and simple…It’s Okay to Not Be Okay.

This is the second review I have read for this drama, and also the second review to give it a 10 out of 10 score. This drama was already on my list, but I’m guessing that I’m moving it up a few spaces on my priorities list. Your review certainly was incredibly convincing, and with every word that you wrote your love for this series shines through it. I definitely like stories such as these, and even though this might not be the usual kind of series that I watch, I’ve become very interested for it! Your review was absolutely amazing! I loved reading it! 😊

Aww, thank you for saying that! I’m so glad you enjoyed the review 🙂 It truly was an amazing drama. I love kdramas in general, but it’s rare for me to give a 10 and be completely in love with a drama like this one accomplished.

Yes, it’s probably not the usual kind of series you go for, but it’s definitely an incredibly well done series with some amazing characters to watch grow. I hope if you do watch it that you enjoy it too 🙂

That’s definitely one of the reasons why I try to keep my blog as varied as possible. I always like to introduce new things, K-dramas ofcourse being one of them….I’m trying to spread the word about how good those are, whenever I can 😊

I was waiting for you to review this drama.
I loved this drama, this is the first time I gave a vote to a drama before it even ended, there were still missing 3/4 episode before the end, and also it was the first time I gave 10/10* to a drama that I followed and watched every week. The only Kdrama that I gave such a perfect score was Reply 1988, that’s why It’s okay not to be okay become my favorite Korean drama of all time along with Reply 1988. I watched many Korean dramas, because of you I recovered many great Korean Dramas such as Signal, Money Flower, Empress Ki, etc.
It’s okay not to be okay was different from other Korean dramas, I even watched the Behind the scenes on YouTube and you could see the chemistry between the actors and also the staff. I admit I hope Kim Soo Hyun and Seo Ye Ji to be engaged but it’s just my dream because you could see how these two actors were happy working together and not only that.
This drama for me checked every single box for a perfect drama: the story, the characters, the scenery, the direction, the music, and the emotion it delivers to you. Everything for me was perfect.
I can’t wait to see the next project of each actor, actress, director, and scriptwriter. I’m really looking forward to Kim Soo Hyun and Seo Ye Ji’s next project.
This 2020 is surely a difficult year, but I am happy to see that South Korea was able and is being able to deliver to us many great Korean dramas, even though watching the recent news I hope the situation improves for many actors and actresses, I watched less Korean drama this year than the years before but the dramas that I watched were truly great I would like to recommend what I watched and enjoyed: Psycopath Diary, Black Dog, Hot Stove League, Dr. Romantic 2, The world of married, and obviously It’s okay not to be okay. There are two other great dramas but I don’t know why but I have some uncertainties: Itaewon class and Clash Landing on you.
I would like to write more about this Korean Drama but luckily there’s you and I can only agree with you with this review.

I’m so glad you loved this drama too! It really was something special 🙂 I can see how this drama would easily become one of your favorite dramas of all time. It really does check all of those boxes with the story, characters, actors, overall production, and thoughtful messages. I don’t give out a lot of 10’s, but this was one of the easiest 10’s I’ve ever given out. It’s just that amazing!

You’re right, 2020 has been a difficult year. I too haven’t been able to get in as many as I usually do because of everything going on. But I’m grateful to have been able to enjoy some wonderful dramas like this one. I really hope the current situation in Korea improves soon and that everyone is safe.

I’m also really happy that you have found some great dramas through this site, and thank you so much for your nice words 🙂

Question: What took you so long to write this review, Kay? I was waiting for this for a while now. LOL.

You pretty much wrote everything I wanted to say. A very special drama indeed. Amazing! Like wow! I am speechless! I’m quite sad it’s over. I could watch 100 more episodes of this.

I have so many things I want to say but this drama is so amazing I have to end it here. I might not be able to stop. LOL.

Anyhow, I’m a proud Seo Ye-ji fan. I knew she was amazing ever since I saw her in Lawless Lawyer. Saranghae! Saranghae, Ye-ji-ssi! Saranghandagoo! Saranghandanikka?! Chincha nomu nomu nomu Saranghae!

Haha, sorry to make you wait Fred 🙂 Honestly, this is a drama that is both equally easy and hard to write a review for. There is so much to say and discuss yet it feels impossible to do the drama justice with my words. It’s so hard to convey just how truly amazing this drama is.

I too am so sad that it is over and miss it so much. I could go on and on about my love for it. And I have been a fan of Seo Ye Ji for a long time, since way back when she was in Potato Star. She was so funny in that, but I had no idea just how much talent she had. She continually delivers and impresses me. Not many could pull off this role.

Oh, and I’m so happy you found another drama that checked all of those amazing boxes with this one. I know how hard they are to find! hehe 🙂

A well-deserved 10! I had some minor issues with the villain’s story, but it made more sense to think of this person as a fairy tale villain rather than a real villain.
Great review for a great drama!

Well deserved indeed 🙂 Yes, the villain story was an interesting aspect of the drama. I can see where compared to the rest you might have minor issue, but I too really thought of them as like a fairy tale villain. The drama had established enough of that fairy tale quality to it that I just looked at the villain as an extension of that concept. Truly an amazing and special drama for sure! 🙂

The 10 is rare indeed! This one was definitely deserving of it though 🙂 Best drama I’ve seen in a couple of years. I was impressed with every aspect of it. I’m thrilled to hear that you are really enjoying it too 🙂

Haha, I know how it is to ninja my way through reviews of dramas I haven’t watched/completed. Most of my reviews only contain vague or minor spoilers, and I will definitely signal if I’m going into true spoiler territory. I know some don’t want anything spoilery at all though, which is understandable 🙂

I’m really excited to read your review of the drama because I know you will be able to explore the themes, characters, and drama as whole to a depth that constantly impresses me. This series is really hard to convey through words just how amazing it is. I know you’ll do it justice though 🙂

Oh I can only imagine the episode notes you have for this one! 😂 There’s seriously just so much to unpack in a drama like this when you end up going deep with it. I usually do more concise reviews, but I could easily write a novella if I wanted to really explore all that this drama has to offer.

Oooh, possibly you’re longest review yet? I know Healer was the longest for awhile, but didn’t a more recent one top that or at least come close? But maybe we’ll have a new winner to reign as champion, hehe 😂

Ahaha! My episode notes are already longer than quite a few of my reviews (more than 16,500 words as I type this!), and I’m still several eps away from the finale! 😱

I think Healer came in at around 15,000, and then CLOY overtook it at 17,600. So.. the possibility of a new record is quite high! 😆 I’m sure some folks wish I had your conciseness.. I only manage it occasionally, lol. 😅

That was it! I thought there was a more recent one that took the record 🙂 But it does sound like this one may very well take over that. I’m sure even in just the last few eps you will have plenty to add to your notes, hehe 🙂

    Hello Kay,
Not yet watched this one but i have my fingers crossed. I already liked the feel of the whole thing from the first time I landed on the poster of the main lead; two very strong actors av always wanted to see again. Loved Seo ye Ji in Hwarang. Brief as her appearance was there, you could tell she had a lot to offer. And now paired with Kim, the handsome Kim😍 I already felt I was in for a treat. And now while reading through your review, I felt like I had watched the drama already🤣🤣🤣🤣 it’s that good I guess. From the trailers av watched so far, I must say, am pretty impressed with the way Kim Su Hyun settled into his character… He really emmersed himself into the lost troubled yet vulnerable guy. Had never expected to see that side of him in his roles. That was touching.
Let me stop here and save the rest for when av properly watched this beautiful series😂😂😂.

And yes, the actors in this one are truly amazing! Seo Ye Ji really shines here, and Kim Soo Hyun makes a big impact also. Wonderful characters for both of them. Oh Jung Se’s performance has to be mentioned too 🙂

Its review from you, Kay, finally. 😍
I have a feeling that you were going to like It’s Okay to Not be Okay, upon only watching the first quarter of the drama. While I also really really like It’s Okay as a whole, I had very very few minor struggles while watching it. Say for an instance, of how the show managed the villain’s plot of the unusual fairytale-like love story of Ko Mun Young and Moon Gang Tae, with Mun Young’s mom resurfacing on the climatic stretch. I’d like to say I was a bit flabbergasted but felt a little dismayed. That revelation didn’t win me over actually.
But apart from that (though I know show really exerted an absolute A for effort into coming up with its twists), I couldn’t quibble with it any more. More than any drama else, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay is a rare genuinely healing drama that captured my and I know for sure many viewers’ hearts too, in its thought-provoking and heartfelt plot. A masterpiece-potential indeed! 😊

Will share to you soon of my whole review of the show. 😀

Well, you were absolutely right! I fell in love with this one quickly and stayed hooked all the way through 🙂

Even though you had a few minor issues with it, I’m really glad that you still enjoyed it and all it had to offer. You’re not alone as I’ve encountered several people who didn’t love how the villain story line played out. Understandable for sure. Luckily, I thought it fit with the overall fairy tale narrative, so even though it was quite over the top in some ways, I still liked it (of course, who are we kidding, when do I ever not like over-the-top, lol 😂 )

I’ll definitely look forward to reading your full thoughts on this one 🙂

*It’s Okay to Not be Okay

I, at first, was deliberating whether to watch Pyscho But It’s Okay (better known as It’s Okay to Not be Okay) or not. So glad that I did. Thanks to the many positive and overwhelming feedbacks that other viewers expressed for this drama.
It’s Okay to Not be Okay focused on the healing romance between a children book author and a caregiver of a psychiatric hospital and their journey to finding their true happinesses and overcoming their internal pains and struggles. Well, the story plot might sound very ordinary and plain, if you would prejudge it without checking it out. I was honestly one of those that didn’t get excited upon reading Kim Soo Hyun’s comeback drama after 5 years, and its not-so-catchy plot. But the saying that goes “Never judge the book by its cover” is always true. So due to the hyper kdrama netizens, I finally managed to watch it, and would have missed such a great drama. 😊
Kim Soo Hyun is Moon Gang Tae, a caregiver in a psychiatric hospital. Though he’s warm and always smiles, he is rather poignant and sad, and hides his pains and fears through putting smiles on his face. He has an older brother who is autistic. He unconditionally loves and takes care of his older brother alone, since he and his brother became orphans since they were just kids. This is Kim Soo Hyun’s by far best performance, for me. He showed his versatility as a veteran actor, for portraying Moon Gang Tae so perfectly. And no doubt why he’s the highest paid South Korean actor on the record.
Seo Ye Ji is Ko Mun Young. She’s a children’s book writer, who has antisocial personality disorder and is easily irritated. She always stands out in the crowd for her extravagant and glamorous dresses. She always does what she wanted and gets what she wants in life. Though on the outside, Ko Mun Young has every luxury in life, she’s lonely and emotionally and mentally stressed, and couldn’t escape from her troubled and rather disturbing childhood. Her father is sick for a long time and is staying at a psychiatric hospital, while her mother disappeared ages ago. She just thought that her mom already died. Seo Ye Ji is fantastic and amazing as Ko Mun Young. I couldn’t imagine any other actress to play such memorable character, as she’s more than perfect for the role. And I’ll be checking her other works too. Her chemistry with Kim Soo Hyun is very organic. It feels real and it’s as if she and Kim Soo Hyun have been together for a very long time. Their bickerings were super fun and cute, while their serious moments were very heartfelt too.
While the drama’s highlight is our romantic leads and their healing journey, the show is also packed with many good supporting characters portrayed by great actors. First, is Oh Jung Se playing as Moon Sang Tae, Moon Gang Tae’s older brother who is autistic. I take my bow and salute Oh Jung Se for such an amazing play! He’s one memorable, unforgettable character I would always love to remember. Then, there is Nurse Nam Ju Ri and Lee Sang In. I like Nam Ju Ri, because she’s one honest and realistic character, but I didn’t like her enough for Gang Tae though. Her unexpected blossoming romance with Lee Sang In (who is portrayed by Lee Joo Hun,who was part of Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2. So funny that I finished the whole series of It’s Okay, without realizing it was Lee Joo Hun. Hahaha) is good. So at least she’s not completely heartbroken in this story. 😃
And then, we have some older characters that are also as great as our lead characters. I’d love to especially commend again and again Kim Mi Kyung (She’s always amazing! 😍) as Kang Soon Deok as Nam Ju Ri’s mother. What a performance bringing a minor role into the spotlight. I will always be a fan of this eommoni. Seeing her in this drama guarantees me that I’m in the good hands. 😊
So while I honestly love this drama, there were very very few things I didn’t quite like in it. It didn’t get us to see at least reasonable excuses why Ko Mun Young’s mother grew into an almost psychopathic woman and a controlling mother to Mun Young. Well, in crime dramas, they at least showed us how their psychopath killers turned into monsters. Haha. Another thing is Ko Mun Young’s reckless and impulsive ‘murderous’ actions. Say for an instance, on the first episode, she tried to stab a man by a knife. I understand that she has a mental personality disorder, making her easily irritated and couldn’t control her anger. But what I couldn’t understand is how she got away every single time, with her manager giving money to the victim as compensations. It’s unhealthily unjust to be honest. (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!) Then, that revelation of who Ko Mun Young’s mother is. Well, I was flabbergasted but wasn’t that surprised to find out that she is actually Ko Mun Young’s mom because I accidentally read it on the social media even before I watched that episode, and ended up discovering such a spoilage. Hahaha. I honestly don’t know what to actually feel about it. I don’t think (or maybe do) it is necessary to turn an initially good person into a monster, in just a blink. I really really liked Nurse Park’s character as the firm but caring head nurse in OK Hospital. And I ended up dismayed of how the show almost felt like fooled me by doing that. 🙁😀 And that I lost such a fave character in only a sudden. I mean, I think I would rather have liked it more if Ko Mun Young’s mom really died that day years ago. And their feelings and thoughts that she is still alive with a completely different face while hiding her monstrous truth, was only a product of the traumatic pasts that made Ko Mun Young and her father delusional and were stuck in their fears and emotional scars. (SPOILER ENDS)
Other than those things, It’s Okay to Not be Okay is an amazing drama overall. It could easily be considered as gem and masterpiece by many viewers. Aside from the so-unique and extraordinary story, the leads phenomenally and perfectly portrayed Ko Mun Young and Moon Gang Tae. In the future, when someone asked me about this drama, I’d even clearly remember the names of these characters (Moon Gang Tae, Ko Mun Young, Moon Sang Tae 😍) Even their kisses were so passionate, and so thirst-quenching. There were so many great supporting characters in the drama too. Oh Jung Se, and his breakthrough performance really deserves an award also.
I also really love how the drama moved me in its simplistic yet very heartwarming scenes. I easily get it why people loved it (and I ended up liking it so much too) because of how this drama brought us to many life lessons – about emotions, pains, scarred hearts, troubled minds, uneasy feelings, lost souls and healing. It teared many eyes, and even pierced through many hearts of its viewers. By the simple internalized conversations of Ko Mun Young and Moon Gang Tae, or Moon Gang Tae talking with his friend, of how his life has been changed, or by simple gestures of Moon Gang Tae trying to tame his mad brother, or every little adorable thing Moon Sang Tae do, each scene always feels warm.
So I ended up liking It’s Okay to Not be Okay very much. It’s sometimes poignant and sometimes funny and sometimes romantic, but it is always heartfelt and heart-wrenching. 😊

This was a wonderful review! You wonderfully highlighted all of this drama’s strengths from the amazing actors, the well-developed characters, the heart and emotion, the solid and unique story, and so much more. It makes you think, makes you laugh, and makes you cry. It takes a truly special drama to do that 🙂

I’m really glad that despite a few things you didn’t like, you still loved this one for the most part. It really is a gem of a drama. It’s that special unicorn I’m always looking for that is hard to find. All three of the lead actors were perfectly cast, and I enjoyed each of them so much. What do we have to do to get more dramas like this? hehe

I am sorry I don’t agree with your review totally. Yes the actors were great. But the series isn’t as interesting as you painted it. Crash Landing that you gave 7/10 was way more interesting!

That’s alright, we all have our own personal tastes in what we like in dramas 🙂 This is a heavily character driven series in terms of story, so I understand that’s not going to be for everyone. Crash Landing on You was a solid drama that I enjoyed too, it was just draggy at times. It’s good that you enjoyed that one so much though 🙂

She obviously loved the series to give it a high rating, what’s with the isn’t as interesting as you painted it? It’s called personal preference. I find Crash Landing quite boring, to be honest.

[…] This is a heart-wrenching yet beautiful story of growth and healing. The characters are flawed, but we come to understand them and root for their personal growth and happiness. They don’t have to be perfect to achieve that either. Love and acceptance can be found in imperfection. This is a truly special drama that is not to be missed. My Rating: 10/10 (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay Review) […]

An amazing and magical review for what truly was a magical show. I finished it today and absolutely loved it from start to finish. The journey we take with the characters in this drama is one that doesn’t let up or gets boring for even a single second. It’s the performances and it’s many beautifully written characters that make this show extra special. I also really enjoyed the many children’s books and the illustrations…so much work and time and effort went in this series to make it extra special. One must see K-drama that’s for sure.

Thank you for saying that! I’m really glad you enjoyed the review 🙂 It really was a magical show in every way. Like you, I loved it from start to finish. Every scene and character interaction is meaningful. Beautiful on many levels. And yes, the attention to detail to make this show special was wonderful, particularly with the use of the fairytale elements, books, and illustrations. I agree, a must see kdrama 🙂
