Crash Landing On You tells the story of a wealthy heiress (Son Ye Jin) that crash lands in North Korea while paragliding.  She then meets a North Korean officer (Hyun Bin) who tries to help her by hiding her, and they eventually fall in love.

Son Ye Jin plays they wealthy heiress Yoon Se Ri. She is a bit spoiled and high-maintenance, but she has a very kind heart as well as a bubbly personality. She does her best to adapt to her difficult circumstances, but she has a lot of challenges to face in order to get back home.

Hyun Bin is the North Korean officer Ri Jung Hyuk. He stumbles upon Se Ri and ends up taking her in and hiding her with the help of his men. He comes off a bit unconcerned at first, but he’s actually a very good man who goes to great lengths to protect Se Ri.

We knew Crash Landing On You was going to be hit from the moment it was announced as it comes from the writer of popular dramas like My Love From Another Star, Producer, and Legend of the Blue Sea. We can usually expect good love stories from her, and Crash Landing On You was no different.

Now, I honestly didn’t love this drama to the extent that many people seemed to, but it was still a good watch for me. I liked the unique premise of a South Korean woman getting stranded in North Korea and being aided by a soldier. I always enjoy a little co-habitation hi-jinks too, and that’s what we get here.

The star-crossed romance between Jung Hyuk and Se Ri was an emotional one. We started with some cute bickering and then watched their feelings for each other grow. Son Ye Jin was very fun and lively here.

This is also easily one of my favorite roles of Hyun Bin. He frequently plays characters that are a bit stoic, and this was no different, but Jung Hyuk had this sweet, softness to him that Hyun Bin nicely brought out. It made for a really great character. I enjoyed this duo’s scenes together quite a bit.

We also had quite a few really fun supporting characters with the other soldiers helping Se Ri as well as the North Korean townspeople. They added plenty of laughs to the drama as well as nice helping of heart.

I sadly didn’t much care for our secondary leads of Seung Jun (Kim Jung Hyun) and Dan (Seo Ji Hye) though. Seung Jun was mildly amusing at times, but I didn’t really like him, and Dan wasn’t particularly likable either.

They also didn’t get a lot of screen time initially which didn’t allow me adequate time to connect with them. They do finally develop their stories later in the drama, but it was a bit too late for me.

I wasn’t really feeling anything going on in South Korea either. Most of those characters were Se Ri’s family who were just greedy and unlikable in general. Luckily, there wasn’t a lot of time spent there in the first half of the drama. SPOILERS: Of course, that changes when Se Ri, Jung Hyuk, and the soldiers make it down, and then we get a lot more time there. END OF SPOILERS

I think the biggest drawback for the series was the really long episodes. They start out long and just get longer as the series goes on. Multiple episodes are over one and half hours with the finale clocking in at a whopping one hour and fifty-one minutes! I believe that’s the longest episode of a drama I have ever watched.

This all resulted in a lot of plot filler with the overall pacing suffering as a whole. We do get a fair amount of fluff too. While the story itself was quite good, it felt like the plot sort of moseyed along. For a while, we just go several rounds of Se Ri attempting and failing at returning to South Korea.

SPOILERS: Then when Se Ri finally makes it back to South Korea, we still had a lot of the series left, and I felt the show lost a lot of steam despite some decent plot developments towards the end of the drama. The highlight during this time for me was our lovable crew of soldiers adjusting to life in Seoul. It provided some great humor as well as some very endearing moments. END OF SPOILERS

These things probably won’t be an issue for you though if you fall in love with all of the characters, the atmosphere in the drama, the excellent overall production, and the epic romance at its heart.

Crash Landing On You had a good mix of romance and humor along with the more serious plot of Se Ri in hiding and constantly at risk of being discovered. There’s a big baddie out to get her and Jung Hyuk who causes plenty of trouble too.

At about that third of the way through mark, we really start to have some big relationship developments happen between Jung Hyuk and Se Ri. Their relationship was the focal point of the drama, so this was a great thing.

Lots of emotions become involved as they face the difficulties of their situation and a love that seems impossible. There are some wonderful scenes that showcase their star-crossed love and raw emotions combined with an excellent soundtrack to enhance everything.

While it had its issues for me, there was plenty to enjoy with Crash Landing On You. With a grand romance and plenty of swoon-worthy moments, there are lots of feels to be had as well a fairly unique plot. It received an immense amount of love from fans, so those who are considering it should definitely give it a look.

My Rating: 7/10

I dropped all of those dramas by this writer early on, so I didn’t even try to start this one. Her stories just ain’t my thing and going by what I’ve read about Crash Landing, it’s more of the same. Glad you found most of it worth your time though. 😊

The epi lengths of some kdramas are getting beyond ridiculous.

Yeah, I knew this one wouldn’t be your style at all, hehe. I usually like this writer’s dramas pretty well. I didn’t love this one quite as much, but it was still a good watch for me 🙂 I know what you mean though, these episode lengths on the cable channels are getting out of hand. I would rather them plan for 20 or 24 eps instead of making 16 eps crazy long. It really affects the flow and pacing of the plot 😛

I couldn’t understand why Seri’s mother had to abandon her own child at the beach – it was never explained? Or did I miss something?

It seemed that she was Se Ri’s stepmom. Not sure if Se Ri was from an affair or what, but the stepmom abandoned her for that reason.

I liked the OTP, but I also liked the side romance between Seung Jun and Dan. I do have a soft spot for bad boys with a heart of gold and redemption arcs. So I was not happy with the writer’s treatment of this couple. I am wondering if this development was intended from the start or the writer changed the story under pressure from the media. I discovered that writing fan fiction was a very productive way to deal with drama-induced heartbreak.
Overall, it was a very good drama. I agree with your comment about the episodes being too long. I also thought that the main romance lost some steam when the story shifted to South Korea. I liked the supporting characters.
As a high-stakes romance, this drama worked pretty well. I think I prefer The Tale of Nokdu though.

I really liked the OTP too 🙂 But yes, I didn’t love how the second romance was handled between Seung Jun and Dan. I thought it should have been developed much sooner.

Same feelings about the long eps and the romance losing some steam when shifting to South Korea. But despite its flaws, like you said, it was a good drama. It had so many good elements and a very high stakes romance which is always enjoyable. I did prefer The Tale of Nokdu too though, hehe 🙂

I think I enjoyed this one a bit more than you did, but by and large, I think we agree on many things on this show! How about that?!! 😀 My review is turning into a monster as I type this. You are much more concise than I am! 😆

Woohoo! Add one we both mostly enjoyed the list 🙂 Haha, yeah, I tend to write more moderate sized reviews to just hit the highlights. I have to hold back sometimes though because it is easy to write a novel after watching some dramas, lol.

But that’s why I appreciate your more in depth style. You really grasp the themes and characters in dramas and know how to word that in such an engaging way. I can imagine this drama would leave you with a lot to say and turn into a monster (not quite like the monster review for Healer though, right?…that’s one for the record books 😂 )

I agree with the second leads romance story being slow. I wrote it in my review as well. But I got connect better with this drama special in the North Korea part. It was my favourite. Yes the episodes were long but it didn’t hurt me as I was very engaged in the drama.

I definitely wish the second leads story could have been done a bit better. And I too preferred the North Korean part. Still a good drama though 🙂 It’s good that you enjoyed the longer episodes. That’s the thing, if you’re liking something and just want more of it, the longer the better! hehe 🙂

We seem to have had the same reaction to this one – good but not great, enjoyable but a bit draggy. I know a lot of people seemed to have been over the top in love with it and I wanted to be one of them but just couldn’t, even though there was a lot to love. I’m glad I watched it though 🙂 Hyun Bin will always have a special place in my heart!

Yep, it looks like we were right together on this one. I too wanted to love it, especially with how many positive elements it had, but it just stayed in the good territory. Like you, it was still enjoyable, and I’m glad I watched it 🙂

I am impatiently waiting for your review of this drama. I agree with the 99% of what you commented, except for the part of Seo Dan and Gu Seung Jun. (Actually I still have the last episode with me left, but just not in the mood to finish yet). I care more for them than the main couple actually. HAHAHA. While I love Hyun Bin and Captain Ri is super cute, their non-ending bidding of goodbyes made me bored. (I AM SORRY to say). I am sad of what had happened to Dan and Seung Jun during the fifteenth episode (and I don’t know yet what would happen next), and I just love to see them both together in the next dramas, maybe as the main couple next time. 🙂
For the main couple, yes I did agree that we could sympathize with their love story, and those continuing struggles they have to face to be together, but it somehow bored me at times. Son Ye Jin’s brightly and bubbly character here is good, but there are times that I don’t enjoy them. For Ri Jung Hyuk, I did like him, but it;’s nothing compared to Robin in Hyde Jekyll Me (10/10). Hehehe.
Still Bin oppa is on my top 5 list of favorite oppas in the Dramaland though. ❤

So while the drama has enough to offer and enjoy, there are those few times that it became dull and draggy too (not to mention those very lengthy episodes which I believe is not very necessar). Yes I do love those dramas giving us extras like epilogues, that I did enjoy a lot during Marriage Not Dating (10/10), Fight For My Way (9/10) days, it wasn't as great though here in CLOY.

So nevertheless, there were characters and scenes that were remarkable and very fun for me, and made up for those draggy issues, like the soldier ensemble (when they came to South Korea), the talking ahjummas in the North, Seri's manager and that insurance agent, and even that motherly scenes of Seri and her stepmom that made my heart melt. TT

Like you, I also was one of those who anticipated this drama from the moment they release that paragliding scene, and even more when I heard a lot of people out there love it. I also wanted to love it. I did have a few issues, but I definitely enjoy it!

    RATING: 8/10

Aww, I’m glad you were looking forward to the review 🙂 Oooh, we did have a lot of similar feelings on this drama! We shared a lot of the same positives and negatives 🙂

I noticed a lot of people really loved the second lead couple too, so you’re not alone. I think I would have enjoyed them a lot more if they would have developed their story sooner. And they certainly had time to do it with those long episodes, lol. But yes, even with its flaws, it was still an enjoyable drama with a unique plot and a big romance to enjoy 🙂

It got long winded and boring so I waited to catch up at the end! The ending for both couple could have a better ending but killing him off was meh ! I cried when they took him awAy! If you could cut the drama to 10/12 episode that would be better! The story line on the bad family members is long & boring as they upp thier
Nonsense! You can skip 3/4 episodes and they are still meeting w parents who continue to disown them!!

Yep, this one would have definitely been better if was condensed down to get rid of some of that filler and overall dragginess. I would have liked them to show less of the bad family members too. It was a good story, it just needed to be more concise 🙂

Thank you so much! I’m happy that you enjoy reading the reviews 🙂 Yes, this was definitely a nice drama and had a lot going for it in terms of the romance, story, and production, but they really drug it out way too long which greatly affected the plot progression and made it draggy at times. A shame for sure. Glad you were able to appreciate its good points too though 🙂

CLOY was my very first Kdrama and the release was timely because we were in lockdown and I had so much time to burn. I was grateful for CLOY for being there at this time. I initially thought CLOY will bore me or it would be cheesy. CLOY definitely changed my view on Kdramas! What I have been missing! The first episode hit me hard and I cant stop and put down my phone to watch another episode. RiRi couple has this intense chemistry! The stoic and sometimes cold, naive and sensitive character of Capt Ri makes him so endearing (not to mention his good looks. Man! He is so handsome in his uniforms!) Seri, on the other hand, was so natural and lovely. I have never cried a bucket watching a movie and in this drama, I have to cry in the dark lest my hubby and kids see me! Overall for a newbie like me, CLOY is over the top! I have rewatched several times some episodes, particularly episode 1 and the last 2 episodes. My life is never the same after CLOY. I have become a fangirl overnight!

What a fun first kdrama! It’s definitely a great introduction to what kdramas have to offer 🙂 It’s so great that you were able to enjoy it during lockdown too. We really did have a good leading couple in this one, and they certainly made the drama.

And I know what you mean about your first drama being life changing. Many of us have the exact same experience. My first kdrama wasn’t near as epic or polished as CLOY, but I still fell in love and it was very life changing 🙂 Welcome to the wonderful world of kdramas!

Hi Kay! I didn’t like this drama much too. Just didn’t feel the chemistry. I do really hope you will check out and review Something in the Rain by Ye Jin. I noticed it’s not yet included in any of your lists. I really do think you will like it since it has same feels as Love Rain. Both dramas are included in my most fave kdramas. Thanks!

Hi Len! Aww, it’s too bad you didn’t enjoy this one much. I liked it fine, but it was draggy and had its issues for sure. Oooh, so you really liked Something in the Rain? I do have it on my list, though I’ve been worried that it wouldn’t be my style since it seemed more realistic/raw looking. But Love Rain is one of my favorite dramas and hearing it compared to that it any way definitely sounds promising 🙂

This was my very first Korean Drama. I really got invested in it especially for the main romance & all the conflicts they came across to try to be together. I fell in love with both Se Ri & Jyun Hyuk in the story so a lot of the scenes especially in the last three episodes brought on the waterworks for me. I do agree with Kay’s review that the episodes got too long & the secondary couple was underdeveloped but I still enjoyed the stories & the performances. Also Ri’s soldiers & the village women were hilarious. I would give the show an 8.5/10.

This is a great kdrama for your first one 🙂 It has a great mixture of elements and shows what kdramas really have to offer. We did have a great couple at the center of this one and they had a very emotional journey. Loved the soldiers and villagers too. Yes, the episodes were definitely a bit too long, but the drama still got a lot right, and it was a good watch. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂

I watched “Crashlanding on you” just recently and definitely understood where the hype came from. The budget and production quality was indeed noticable. I also do agree on the whole episode-length issue tho, because especially in the end it startet stretching the plot until it almost became torturous to watch through all those additional scenes.
Seri and jung hyuck had a very cute and emotionally packed love story but imo they suffered from the main lead syndrom (meaning they where a little too perfect or morally untainted to be relatable, at least for me) a little to much. I did however (a little sceptically at first, I’ll admit) really grow to like so dan’s and seung jun’s story and I also was the most heartbrokem/touched by the development of things regarding them. In the end i do think this drama is a good watch (I did binge all 16 eps over the span of four days, sooo…) but it will challenge your patience at times and I would have wished for a little more depth and screentime for the second lead couple.

Crash Landing was the first K drama that we watched about 6 months ago and since then we’ve only watched Korean series.
We loved everything about CLOY and I thought both in script and acting Dan’s unrequited love for Capt Ri was the best depiction I’ve ever seen.

Crash Landing on You (CLOY) was the first Kdrama I ever watched. I was searching for something to watch on Netflix and came across CLOY. Had it been any other Kdrama I probably would have ignored it. I didn’t like shows with subtitles. But I thought I’d try it since it involved North Korean soldiers and their military along with life in a North Korean Village. The program did not make any mention of the Dear Leader nor his policies which made this program appealing. While I enjoyed this show and will totally recommend it, it suffers from a major flaw that many Kdramas suffer from: Soft endings. SPOILER WARNING! The show end with the leads, after being apart a while, meeting in Switzerland and say they’ll meet each other each year if they can. I want closure. I need a definitive ending, They move in together, or marriage, etc.

When the North Korean soldiers snuck into Seoul and were amazed at what they saw was hilarious.
