Ah, romantic comedies. They are frequently the first experience many people have with Korean dramas, and they continue to be a favorite staple of kdrama fans. And I certainly love them! So adding to my Top 10 series, let me share with you my personal top 10 Korean romantic comedies.
10. Ho Goo’s Love
Plot: A man (Choi Woo Shik) who is naïve, sweet, and warm hearted runs into his first love (Uee) one evening, and their complicated love story is set in motion.
Ho Goo’s love is an absolutely adorable and heartwarming drama. It’s my favorite role of Choi Woo Shik, and he really nailed Ho Goo’s character. We watch a romance blossom between Ho Goo and his first love Do Hee as he wants to care for her and her baby. Watching our little family develop and our characters grow was such a joy.
There is also a dramatic side to the drama that nicely intertwines with the comedic. Misunderstandings abound, and relationships are crazy complicated, but this drama does it right and keeps it interesting and engaging. It was all so much fun with just the right amount of feels. 9. Me Too, Flower
Plot: A wealthy man (Yoon Shi Yoon) pretends to be a regular guy and gets a job as a parking attendant at his company where he clashes with a cynical police officer (Lee Ji Ah). But when their bickering turns to romance, his rich status and lies threaten their relationship.
Me Too, Flower is such an underrated drama! I don’t hear it talked about a lot, and it’s such a shame because it’s an amazing drama. It’s pretty classic in the set up with our couple getting off on the wrong foot and bickering a lot at first. Yoon Shi Yoon and Lee Ji Ah’s fiery chemistry shines through though.
And then the drama explores some deeper topics that include trauma and depression as our couple has to find ways to heal from their past. It was just such a sweet and moving drama that left quite an impression on me. (Me Too Flower Review)
8. Fated to Love You
Plot: A quirky, rich chaebol (Jang Hyuk) and a timid office worker (Jang Na Ra) accidentally have a one night stand that results in a pregnancy and one amazing love story.
Oh how I adore Fated to Love You! This drama just hit so many sweet spots for me. The first half is your standard romantic comedy that then transitions to more of a melodrama in the second half. It is officially the drama I have cried the most during. But that is definitely a good thing! This drama was just able to move me so deeply because of it’s well developed characters and their engaging story.
But even in the midst of tragedy, the drama still had plenty of feel good and fun moments with Jang Hyuk’s lively laugh and Jang Na Ra’s pure sweetness. Seriously, this couple is one of the best around!
For me, Fated to Love You is that perfect mix of comedy and melodrama. With an amazing love story, extremely talented actors, and such a heartwarming story, it truly is a special drama. (Fated to Love You Review)
7. Shopping King Louie
Plot: A rich man (Seo In Guk) wakes up in Seoul, homeless with amnesia, where he meets a sweet country girl (Nam Ji Hyun) who takes him in, and the two work together to discover who he is while having to survive the city.
Shopping King Louie is the definition of a fantastic romantic comedy. I laughed so much, and every single episode had me grinning from ear to ear and enjoying these funny and lovable characters and the crazy situation they had found themselves. The drama was also overflowing with so many heartwarming moments. The romance, the humor, the fun, the characters, and the heartfelt story all work together to create perfection in my book.
Louie and Bok Sil were one of the best drama couples I’ve seen. They warmed my heart and made me smile so many times. All I have are fond memories when thinking about Shopping King Louie. I truly loved it to pieces. (Shopping King Louie Review)
6. Pinocchio
Plot: A man (Lee Jong Suk) whose life was devastated by corrupt reporters seeks to reveal their true motives by becoming one himself. But he never would have expected he would fall in love with the daughter (Park Shin Hye) of one of those reporters.
Pinocchio has that nice mix of a beautifully woven story combined with comedy, romance, and drama that all come together perfectly. I’m a fan of this writer because of her well-rounded and emotionally engaging stories along with well-developed characters.
Dal Po and In Ha are another favorite couple of mine, and they had great chemistry. I smiled so much and truly felt for these characters. I was never bored once with this gem of a drama and have enjoyed it multiple times. I consider Pinocchio a must see kdrama. Pinocchio Review)
5. Boys Over Flowers
Plot: Four rich, handsome guys rule the school, but their world is turned upside down by a spunky transfer student (Goo Hye Sun) who steals their hearts.
It’s the classic Boys Over Flowers that takes the next spot on my list. I’ll never forget the famous F4, played by Lee Min Ho, Kim Hyun Joong, Kim Bum, and Kim Joon. This show is full of teen angst with many misunderstandings and a whole lot of relationship drama. Joon Pyo and Jan Di fight, make up, then fight and make up over and over. There are constant obstacles in their way, many of their own making.
But it’s all presented in a way that is oddly addicting and just plain fun. With fast pacing that leads right from one over the top scenario to another, it’s hard not to get swept up in all of the drama. Boys Over Flowers was a ton of fun, and it will definitely always have a special place in my heart. (Boys Over Flowers Review)
4. Rooftop Prince
Plot: A time travel romance about a prince (Park Yoo Chun) from the past who meets the love (Han Ji Min) of his life in present day Seoul.
Rooftop Prince is another that has that great mix of romantic comedy and melodrama that I love so much. We watch four Joseon men try to adapt to life in modern day Seoul which is a prime set up for lots of humor and fun.
But don’t be fooled, this drama gets very intense and dramatic with a rich story and a mystery to solve. It was so good and just got better as it went. The romance is also amazing and brought me much joy as well as some tears. A truly wonderful drama! (Rooftop Prince Review)
3. Flower Boy Next Door
Plot: A girl (Park Shin Hye) who suffers from agoraphobia has her quiet world turned upside when her neighbor’s energetic and outgoing brother (Yoon Shi Yoon) comes into her life like a whirlwind.
Flower Boy Next Door is a combination of all of the elements I love about kdramas. It is filled with endearing characters and such an incredibly heartwarming story. The humor and more serious moments are so well balanced.
And the chemistry between Yoon Shi Yoon and Park Shin Hye was tangible. Their interactions are so meaningful as they embark on a journey of healing together. I loved seeing them share in simple joys and have fun, but it’s how supportive they were for each other as they went through pain and faced some difficult truths about themselves that really touched my heart. 2. Kill Me, Heal Me
Plot: A man (Ji Sung) struggling with Multiple Personality Disorder brings us smiles and breaks our hearts on his journey to recovery with the help of a special woman (Hwang Jung Eum).
So much could be said about the incredible drama Kill Me, Heal Me. Ji Sung is so engaging and truly phenomenal in his portrayal of a man struggling with Dissociative Identity Disorder. I was able to connect with each of the personalities and was so touched by his story. And thankfully, the drama appropriately used comedy to lighten the mood around his illness.
And Ji Sung’s relationship with Hwang Jung Eum was hilarious yet so tender and romantic. She was amazing for him and really stood by him. I shed a lot of tears over them. The story is wonderful and nicely peels back the layers of the mystery to keep the drama interesting all the way through. Just wow! (Kill Me, Heal Me Review)
1. My Girlfriend is a Gumiho
Plot: Comedy and cute abound when a Gumiho (Shin Min Ah) falls in love with an immature human (Lee Seung Gi).
And finally, the golden drama, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. Not only is it my favorite romantic comedy, it my favorite drama of all time! It hooked me immediately, stole my heart, and has never given it back.
The comedy is gold as we watch Lee Seung Gi and Shin Min Ah have the most adorable romance. It starts out light and innocent, but it progresses into such a deep and rich relationship because of what they have to go through.
He matures into a man while she grows as a person. These two amazing actors nailed their roles in every way. My Girlfriend is a Gumiho owns my heart, and I really can’t imagine anything ever taking its place. (My Girlfriend is a Gumiho Review)
So there they are, my favorite romantic comedies! All of these dramas touched my heart and left an impression on me that will never fade. While there were are quite a few others that I dearly love, this collection really is special to me.
