The Smile Has Left Your Eyes Korean Drama - Seo In Guk, Jung So Min, Park Sung Woong

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes (also known as Hundred Million Stars From the Sky) follows the fateful romance of a mysterious man (Seo In Guk) suspected of murder and a woman (Jung So Min) whose life is completely changed after meeting him.  The woman’s detective brother (Park Sung Woong) becomes obsessed with solving the murder case and protecting his sister as the three embark on a dangerous journey.

If you’re ready for an emotional roller coaster, then be sure to check out The Smile Has Left Your Eyes. It is a darker melodrama that deals with some complicated situations. There are a lot of grey areas and plenty of times you may be wondering who and what you should be rooting for in this twisted situation. So let’s jump into this complex and heartbreaking story.

Seo In Guk plays our mystery man Kim Moo Young. Moo Young has an air of danger about him as well as an eerie quality. Many times he sort of seems bored with what’s happening around him and naturally seems fairly unconcerned.

But he knows how to switch on being socially pleasant when necessary, especially if that involves something he wants. Though the creepy thing is how he goes from seemingly happy and smiling to having a completely dead look in his eyes in an instant. It’s very unsettling.

Jung So Min is Yoo Jin Kang. Her life gets a lot more complicated because of Moo Young. She isn’t fooled by his mind tricks and doesn’t really get along with him, but circumstances keep putting them around each other. As she finds herself more and more drawn to him, little does she know just how dangerous and complex things are about to get.

Then we have Park Sung Woong as Detective Yoo Jin Gook. He is Jin Kang’s older brother. They have a very close relationship as he took care of her growing up. He’s a pretty fun guy, but he is serious on the job. When he begins to suspect Moo Young of murder, he wants nothing more than to keep his sister safe. No matter what it takes.

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes Korean Drama - Seo In Guk and Jung So Min

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes was an interesting drama to say the least. First, our three main actors of Seo In Guk, Jung So Min, and Park Sung Woong were absolutely phenomenal in their roles. They each brought their best and delivered complex and emotional performances. The acting was superb!

Please note: I do discuss minor spoilers during this review, but I will signal if I am about to mention a bigger spoiler.

There are a couple of story lines running throughout the drama. One is the murder of a college student. Jin Gook works to solve this while Moo Young ends up as a main suspect. It adds that bit of a crime element to the drama.

The main story ties into this and involves the mystery of Moo Young and his past. We slowly learn about him, where he comes from, and why he is the way he is.

The drama really did well at playing up the questions surrounding Moo Young and his motives. He always seems to know what he’s doing and like he has a plan when interacting with people. He’s calculating. He would bait people with his questions and then seem pleased with inappropriate things. But then there’s a hint of something deeper that leaves you wondering, “Is he really bad or is he just misunderstood?”

But Moo Young seems to have this disconnect concerning others. He does what he wants and isn’t quite able to understand how his actions hurt others. For instance, in the beginning of the drama, he develops a relationship with Jin Kang’s friend Seung Ah.

On one hand, he has some interest in her, but it doesn’t seem to go that deep. While on the other hand, she is completely invested in him and ready to turn her life upside down. Moo Young just doesn’t see the problem with his casual interest and life altering actions.

SPOILER NEXT 2 PARAGRAPHS

This becomes increasingly evident as he takes a more serious interest in Jin Kang. He just continues following his current feelings while she is taken aback by how he could betray Seung Ah and so boldly proclaim his feelings for her.

And when things eventually go really south resulting in Seung Ah’s death, Moo Young just doesn’t seem to have any remorse for how things played out. He didn’t directly kill her, but his actions certainly influenced the events that led to her death.

END OF SPOILERS

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes Korean Drama - Seo In Guk and Jung So Min

The relationship between Moo Young and Jin Kang is a complicated one. Early on, she dislikes him because she sees right through his mind games and doesn’t like it. But with the companies they work for being involved together and him dating her friend, they constantly run into each other. I loved watching their conversations. They were so blunt it was a bit uncomfortable.

And while a part of her dislikes Moo Young, he begins to pique her interest which then grows into more. She is drawn to him despite her better judgement and the urging of those around her to stay away from him. And this is so frustrating for her as she simply doesn’t know how to handle it and finds herself continually worrying for Moo Young and seeking him out.

Now this isn’t the kind of drama with a swoony lead character. Moo Young is such an unsettling man, and he has a lot of qualities not to like. We as the audience are left trying to piece together just how bad is he? There is no question that he definitely does some bad things. No ifs, ands, or buts. He tends to leave a path of destruction in his wake.

Though with anything, there is a story to be told. As we slowly learn more about him, the puzzle pieces start to come together. But everything still isn’t black and white. He’s complicated, as is his story.

SPOILERS NEXT 2 PARAGRAPHS

There’s a scene at the end of episode 9 where Jin Kang expresses her frustrations to Moo Young about being drawn to him and asking him if he is a bad person. As usual, he has little to say. But then he says he won’t do something bad if she tells him not to. Which she does.

And in such a pitiful way, he asks, “Will you teach me how to be a good person?” It was a heartbreaking moment in that there did seem to be a piece of him inside that was willing to change, but he needed help to do so. But would he be able to change even if he wanted to?

END OF SPOILERS

When it comes down to it, Moo Young and Jin Kang are involved in a complex and dangerous romance. Moo Young definitely has a soft spot for Jin Kang, but his natural instincts combined with learning about his past really work against them. And more importantly, Jin Gook is also against them.

The brother/sister relationship between Jin Gook and Jin Kang was an interesting one. They are very close with each other, and Jin Gook is very protective of her. So when Moo Young comes into the picture, their happy relationship gets more complicated.

He does everything he can to protect her, yet she seems to be heading down a dangerous path no matter what he says or does. It certainly strains things, and the two have some very emotional moments with each other as their relationship begins to falter.

Then there is the tense relationship between Moo Young and Jin Gook. Jin Gook gets a bad feeling about Moo Young early on and is hot on his trail. I found it interesting that Moo Young seemed to really enjoy toying with Jin Gook.

He doesn’t try to get him off his back or proclaim his innocence. Instead, Moo Young likes to play with fire and say things that fuels Jin Gook’s suspicions. It made things between these two very intense.

SPOILER: The frustrating thing about Jin Gook though is that much of the present day badness could have been avoided if he would have just been honest with Moo Young and Jin Kang when he realized who Moo Young was. So much pain and suffering could have been avoided. Jin Gook, you’re a decent guy, but you royally screwed everything up!

MAJOR ENDING SPOILERS BELOW (Beware pics)

So I haven’t seen the original Japanese version of this drama, but I was aware of the controversial ending of the main couple turning out to be brother and sister and how they died. I was actually kind of hoping they would keep that ending since it was such a big part of the original, plus it just fits right in with their tragic love story.

I was pretty sure the Korean version wouldn’t go that route though. Of course, they teased us with the possibility of Moo Young and Jin Kang being brother and sister throughout the drama and then nearly confirmed it towards the end. Due to incomplete memories from Moo Young and Se Ran saying that they were, Moo Young ends up believing it, leaving him completely distraught.

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes (Hundred Million Stars From the Sky) Korean Drama - Seo In Guk

But it was all just an evil trick by Se Ran because of her fascination and jealousy towards Moo Young. They weren’t really brother and sister at all. They were just close as children during a bad situation.

But that lie set in motion the true tragedy come. Moo Young left Jin Kang and ultimately murdered Se Ran resulting in him going on the run. Things got seriously bad for our lovers. It was even looking like Moo Young was ready to take his own life in the mountain cabin from his childhood. But after a tense and heartfelt reunion with Jin Kang, she convinced him not to, and it looked as though the pair finally had a chance at some sort of happiness.

But no! Se Ran’s henchman shows up for some revenge and shoots them both in cold blood. Bleeding on the floor, Moo Young finally confesses his love for Jin Kang, and they die together. Now there’s a tragedy for you!

So of course, it was devastating that our lovers died after such a long, difficult, and hard fought battle. I was certainly in tears! But I was completely satisfied with the ending. Their lives and romance was wrought with tragedy, and in many ways this just seemed like a fitting end.

But there was a bright spot in it. The secrets were finally out, and they both completely accepted each other. And Moo Young had truly changed because of Jin Kang. It was on his death bed, but he confessed he loved her. Although they didn’t get a chance to live happily, at least they loved and accepted each other and died in that moment together. It was tragically beautiful.

END OF SPOILERS

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes is one of those dramas that will leave an impression on you. It’s a roller coaster of emotions watching all of the ups and downs as well as the multitude of lies and secrets.

Questions abound as we go on this difficult journey to learn who Moo Young is and why he’s different. To learn if a woman named Jin Kang can make a difference in his life. And whether this dangerous romance will ultimately lead to happiness or tragedy. Be prepared, it’s a difficult road ahead both for them and for us.

My Rating: 8/10

Excellent review as always of course!
But I am still stuck in the third episode. It’s like I lost my momentum and I couldn’t get back to it. Hmmm, I will just pass on this one for now, but I will restart it from the top maybe by early next year.

Thank you 🙂 I do think the first few eps are a bit slower than the rest of the drama. The set up took a bit to get going. It also takes a while to really start focusing heavily on the main couple and their story too. Hopefully, you have better luck with it next year 🙂

    Hi Kay,

I literally just finished watching this and happy to see your review. Excellent review as always. It really was an excellent drama. I loved the story, the acting, the pace, the mystery and most importantly the ending. Though it was so tragic, as you said it was absolutely fitting. I also felt like we got closure. Though, I have not seen the original, if they were really bro/sis in the original then I am so glad they did not go down that path in this version. That’s just sick. I am definitely not going to watch the original now. 🙂

Anyway, this drama was worth the wait to binge watch.

Thank you so much D! This is definitely a binge worthy drama. Compelling story, stellar acting, intriguing mystery. Completely tragic but engrossing romance.

Haha, yeah, I understand not wanting to see the original because of that. While I haven’t seen it all, I’ve seen pieces and read about it. It was even darker and the being brother/sister thing is just about as tragic as it can get it. And that’s what they were going for.

I liked how they still utilized that concept in this version to set in motion the tragedy to come but then lightening it up a bit so their romance wasn’t quite so tainted before their still very tragic end. It was a well executed adaptation 🙂

Yeah, this is not a drama everyone will love. It’s dark, twisted, and depressing. You definitely have to be in the mood for a more tragic sort of romance with this one, hehe

I have been diligently waiting for your review. I don’t even know where to start with this drama. It truly (to me) was a fantastic drama making me feel so many emotions. So much so I am going to take a break from the dramas for a bit. SIG, wow. His character made me feel so uneasy at times. I kept wondering if he truly had any redeeming qualities in him. At times, I felt truly sorry for him, hated him, loved him and pitied him. I think he deserves an award for his performance. They all did a wonderful job and played their characters perfectly. I loved the love story and at first, as I was crying at the end and was wanting a more happier ending, I realized they went full circle, It ended as it should. I gave it a 10/10. And what’s crazy is I am finding myself still thinking a lot about this show. Thanks for the review and it was great, as usual. Thanks for you hard work.

This is a hard drama to gather your thoughts on for sure. This was one of my longer reviews, and it still didn’t come close to conveying everything I felt about it. I agree, it was such an emotional drama, and Seo In Guk was fantastic. I had the same experience with his character. Sometimes I despised him for his actions and other times he just seemed pitiful, and I felt sorry for him. And a big credit goes to Seo In Guk for conveying all of that.

I think we all would love to see our couple happy. But yes, this was a case where their story was tragic so the tragic end fit very well. I think it’s hard for a story to pull that off and this one did. It’s definitely a drama that leaves a lasting impression. Thank you for the encouragement, and I’m happy you found the drama so moving and amazing too 🙂

I’m glad you were more or less satisfied with the whole thing. Lot of others didn’t much like the ending as they thought it was a cop out. I can see where that comes from as it wasn’t really dark enough, nor happy/hopefull enough. Also, it seems a bit silly to get a ‘non entity’ to off the couple out of the blue.

The original ending makes much more sense, but then the jdrama was darker in many ways. I’m actually re-watching it as I realised I’d forgotten a lot of the details and it sarted bugging me, LOL! I’ll probably make a post about my thoughts on it… if I can find the time. 🙂

I guess a drama like this is always going to have disagreements as to how the end should have played out. I know the jdrama was quite dark, so the end seemed fitting for that one. I for one wouldn’t have minded them using the same ending in the kdrama, but I didn’t think they would. But I did like that they used the brother/sister concept to initiate the tragic ending though.

And the second Moo Young killed Se Ran, I knew someone would be out for revenge from that family, so I didn’t really see it as out of the blue. I do see how it would bother some though since it wasn’t a major character that did it. And then it did have a bit brighter ending in that they did die loving each other. So I thought that kind went with the somewhat lighter tone of the kdrama. I was rooting for a tragic ending, so this satisfied me enough though, lol. I’ll look forward to reading your thoughts on it if you get the chance 🙂

Glad to be of help, hehe 🙂 It’s definitely helpful to get spoilers when it comes to deciding if a drama is a right for you sometimes. And yes, if you don’t want sadness and tears, this is a drama to avoid. It’s fairly depressing all the way through with an ending that is pretty tragic. Hopefully, you can find a more uplifting drama for when you have spare time 🙂

This drama was, I thought in all aspects, just fantastic and ahead of its time. And man, what a rollercoaster.

The story, the direction, the acting, and the final result was just above and beyond. Not your typical kdrama, and yet so very powerful, in so many ways. So much metaphor that spoke to greater things, so much unpacking to do. So much SOCIAL COMMENTARY on so many things that it hurts to think about all of it but I certainly will give it full thought. Pretty much any segment or scene can be assessed for what it’s deeper meaning is. And the way it comes full circle is really something else- even with what didn’t make sense, that was intentional and food for thought- and the ending was the only way it could end. You know it as you get closer to the finish line too, but it’s hard nevertheless.

I can understand wanting to watch lighter shows etc. But if you do get a chance, I think there’s a lot to learn about society, people, and psychology from this show.

I also want to do a shout-out to the insanely top-notch performances of SIG and JSM. Now that is what I call some hardcore, professional and veteran-like status, solid acting. Their chemistry was on another level and the love they displayed between the two characters was just so deep and loving, truly beautiful. The kind of love one hopes for (minus the tragedy part).

I think this show got absolutely SHAFTED in the accolades department and I can’t understand it except for, as I said earlier, the show is just ahead of its time. Honestly just disappointing that this show didn’t get the recognition it deserves. One of my top top shows most certainly.

I agree, this is a roller coaster of a drama! It’s definitely a good one in all areas. Packed with power and emotion. And our leads were truly fantastic here 🙂

I too like that dramas like this have so much to say and really make you think because of the psychology involved. It just makes things so interesting and impactful.

It is too bad that this drama and its actors didn’t get recognized more. It really flew under the radar. It’s disappointing when dramas like this seem to fall to the wayside. Luckily, there are a lot of fans, especially international ones, who really enjoyed it, including me and you! 🙂

Well…I just completed this one today, and will have my review up this sunday! I was blown away by it. I absolutely loved it, and despite it’s initial slow start it gained momentum very quickly. I loved the three main leads, and their chemistry. It became frustrating each episode in trying to figure out what exactly Kim Moo-Young’s character is about, but it all came together wonderfully by it’s end. And what an ending…you were not kidding what you wrote here. It’s absolutely tragically beautiful. It’s a series that will be in my mind for quite a while more, I can tell you that. I also can’t wait to watch this with my mum: I’m convinced she will love this one as much as I did😊 Great review! (Glad I checked to see if you wrote about this one, which of course, no surprise (lol) you did!😀)

Yay! I’m so glad that you loved this one! You know I did too 🙂 I was hoping you would experience the consistent build up of momentum and tension that I did as the drama progressed. It just builds and builds with so much story and so many emotions to unpack. So many big questions that need answers. And truly amazing performances from all three of our leads. It’s the kind of drama that really leaves an impact. Tragically beautiful definitely sums up this series for me. I’m interested to read your more detailed take on the drama 🙂

Hi! I watched the whole piece in 2 nights-1 day and i was satisfied, emotional, moved, and i think i fell-in-love with the lead male. he delivered his parts very well. plus, the romantic parts are truly my style, very intimate and sincere

I am currently looking for reviews and the one before u pissed me with his/her 1st thee sentences. really really pissed me that i almost wanna leave a nasty comment but noticing there was no single comment, i was appeased. haha. can u tell. that im glad to find yours. i don’t think i’m just trying to jump on your ship but we thought the same, others may find the the first 3 episodes uninteresting but i think i was drawn to the male lead and i absolute love the female lead., (i’ve only watched 1 of hers on netflix)

thank you for the nice reveiw, i really recommend this but surely to the ones who appreciates complicated characters, who develops into reborn characters. otherwise, they probably would just say “this is boring or disturbing”.

And thank you for saying that! I’m really glad you enjoyed the review. It does sound like we have similar thoughts on the drama. It’s uncommon to find dramas with such complex characters and themes, so that made this one really stand out. It’s the kind of show that really makes you think. And Seo In Guk and Jung So Min were truly fantastic in their roles. I’m glad you enjoyed this one so much like I did 🙂
