Mr. Sunshine Korean Drama - Lee Byung Hun and Kim Tae Ri

The highly anticipated big budget tvN drama Mr. Sunshine starring Lee Byung Hun (Iris) and Kim Tae Ri (The Handmaiden) finally made it’s premiere over the weekend, and it started off with a bang by setting the record for the highest rated premiere ever on tvN.

It brought in an impressive 8.8% in Nielsen drama ratings for episode 1 on Saturday. But it didn’t stop there and rose on up to 9.7% for episode 2 on Sunday. Those are some crazy high numbers for its first week! With a start like that, it certainly has the potential to keep breaking records throughout its run. So now we go on this journey and see where it takes us!

Mr. Sunshine is set during the early 1900’s and is about the romance of a soldier (Lee Byung Hun) of the righteous army and an aristocrat’s daughter (Kim Tae Ri). It follows the story of the soldier who got on a U.S. military expedition as a child and grew up in America. As an adult, he then returns to Korea as a soldier during the final years of the Joseon era. It comes from writer Kim Eun Sook of hits such as Goblin and Descendants of the Sun.

Mr. Sunshine airs Saturday and Sunday on tvN.

As you know, I am really looking forward to this one so it’s very cool to hear that it’s off to such a great start. Hopefully it will continue breaking records ( and of course that it’s a good show 😊).

I’m really looking forward to it too. I expected it to bring in some good numbers, but these certainly set the bar high. I remember how much fun it was to watch Goblin break records week after week, so it will be interesting to see if this does the same 🙂

It’s so far so good. The American accents are a joke and what they did to David Mcinis will never make any sense to me with the budget they had. Besides that it’s good.

Haha, yeah, I think the portrayal of foreigners in kdramas will be off for many years to come. It’s always a bit of a contrast when everything else is so well done. I usually just try to embrace the cringyness as best I can 😉

I do as well, try to embrace it. However, with the popularity growing, it really doesn’t make sense. Plus they use the same actors over and over again. I think this is why I tend to like the movies more. They try to at least get actors that have believable accents.

Very true. I think the actor pool for foreign actors is smaller for dramas. It seems like they end up with a lot of non professionals who are in Korea teaching or as students. It’s still lagging behind movies where they are able to get better actors including professionals who don’t reside in Korea. But maybe with that increase in popularity, hopefully dramas will start working to do better with foreign actors. I still think it’s fairly low on their priority list for most dramas, but with some dramas including more and more foreign actors these days, it’s hopefully paving the way for better quality 🙂
