Thoracic Surgery Korean Drama - Uhm Ki Joon

We now have Uhm Ki Joon (I’m Not a Robot) joining the cast of the upcoming SBS medical drama Thoracic Surgery starring Go Soo (Flower in Prison). He will be returning to a more villainous role as he plays a talented surgeon who is looked down upon because of his educational background and is pitted against Go Soo.

Thoracic Surgery tells the stories of doctors in the cardiothoracic surgery department including a surgeon (Go Soo) who finds himself in a morally compromising position regarding a heart transplant for his mother. It comes from the director and writers of Defendant.

Thoracic Surgery is looking to air in September on SBS.

Really….another medical drama??? Serious question here: would you say these are the most popular genre in Korea? There are so many of them, and they keep adding more. Just curious 😊

  It’s more of a recent trend, especially in the last year or so with the over abundance of legal and medical dramas. This is just my personal opinion: I think it’s a combination of things. Legal/medical/crime type dramas do tend to do well in Korea. And rom-com’s haven’t been fairing as well plus there has been a big decrease in historicals. I think legal and medical dramas are fairly safe to produce, have a pretty straight forward formula, and are budget friendly. There were some issues with Korea and China a couple years back that I think hit the Korean drama market hard as China stopped investing as much in them. So all of that comes together to make medical and legal dramas very appealing. Other international markets are starting to take interest in kdramas more and more though. So I certainly hope it’s a trend that dies out and we can get back to a better balance soon 🙂

    Thanks for this great explanation. I really was wondering about this after seeing so many medical dramas make an appearance these days, but this certainly explains a lot. Like you I really hope that the balance comes back. As I still hope to get started on an historical Korean drama at some point 😀😀
