The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Kim Young Kwang, Soo Ae, Lee So Hyuk, Jo Bo Ah

The Man Living in Our House (also known as Sweet Stranger and Me) is about a woman (Soo Ae) whose life becomes a lot more complicated when a man (Kim Young Kwang) the same age as her turns up claiming to be her late mother’s husband, making him her stepfather.  She doesn’t believe him and then sets out on a mission to prove he is lying.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Soo Ae

We have Soo Ae as Hong Na Ri. Na Ri is a kind and strong-willed woman whose world is turned upside down by our mystery man Go Nan Gil. She is frustrated by his secrecy concerning the situation and wants to discover the truth about him and his relationship with her mother.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Kim Young Kwang

Kim Young Kwang is our mystery man Go Nan Gil. He’s a man of many secrets trying to escape from his past. His journey to accomplish his goals is a hard fought one met with much opposition.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Lee Soo Hyuk

I tend to find that Lee Soo Hyuk just commands the screen when he is on, and he certainly did as Kwon Duk Bong. He’s our second lead (seriously, when is he going to be the main lead?!) who cares very much for Na Ri and does his best to help her. He is an interesting and multi-dimensional character who has plenty of his own issues to deal with.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Kim Ji Hoon

We then have Na Ri’s long time boyfriend, Jo Dong Jin (Kim Ji Hoon). We find out early on that he has been cheating on Na Ri, and the two separate. Kim Ji Hoon is quite funny in this role, and I was really pleased to see him.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Jo Bo Ah

Jo Bo Ah plays Do Yeo Joo, the woman who stole Na Ri’s boyfriend. This girl compulsively lies to get what she wants, and she is a difficult character on many levels. I mostly found her annoying, but she does have her moments where we get a window into her life and insecurities. But this is a character who remains pretty stagnant throughout the drama.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Soo Ae The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Kim Young Kwang

Okay, so The Man Living in Our House ended up being a big disappointment for me. Everything was there to make for a wonderful drama, but all of that potential just seemed to slip away.

The drama starts off very strong with a truly unique story line to set it apart. The characters are all interesting and engaging and nicely intertwined in each other’s lives. The quirky humor is a lot of fun too. It was exactly my style. The drama is also filmed in a way I love with a rich and beautiful color palette that made every scene lovely to look at.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Kim Young Kwang and Lee So Hyuk

But here’s the problem: after the wonderful first few episodes, I found The Man Living in Our House became incredibly draggy. It was one of those times where there wasn’t anything inherently going wrong, but it just seemed to take its sweet time crawling from one event to another.

And this isn’t a case where I feel that it meant to do that. I have enjoyed slower paced dramas that really build a certain low key atmosphere that feels more like an art piece. But this drama just felt slow because I lost my connection with the characters and everything felt dragged out and pointless. And this dragginess worsened as the drama progressed until I finally entered a state of complete boredom.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Kim Young Kwang The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Soo Ae

While Kim Young Kwang and Soo Ae both gave good performances, I found that their characters became so bland. They were just so uninteresting. And aside from a few instances at the beginning of the drama, I never felt their love story.

Things continued to feel bogged down with the constant talk of Dada Finance and land issues. The stakes for the characters were high, but I found that I really just didn’t care, and it seemed like the same issues were repeatedly being talked about with nothing getting accomplished.

The Man Living in Our House Korean Drama - Lee Soo Hyuk

Pretty much the only time I was really perking up was when Lee Soo Hyuk came on screen because 1) like a mentioned, he has a commanding presence and 2) I was genuinely interested in his character. And that was really all I found particularly enjoyable for the bulk of the drama. Maybe the drama should have been about him…

So in the end, the drama ended up being extremely boring. It lost its way early on and seemed to want to do to much while always focusing on the wrong things. While a lot of the things I enjoyed in the beginning were still there in a muted form, they just got buried in the monotony. Considering how wonderfully the drama started out, The Man Living in Our House was such a disappointment.

My Rating: 4/10

Really sad to read this, but it does explain those low ratings. I also liked the storyline for this one, and I was actually considering to watch this one, even though I usually pass on comedy dramas. But, after reading this I am not going to be watching this one. Kim Young Kwang was very good in D-day, so that would have been one of the reasons for watching this one for me. Oh well, it will save me some time I guess 😂

Yeah, it can be hit or miss as to whether I agree with ratings, but this is a time I agree 100%. You can just look at the ratings progression of the show and see how it just kept falling throughout its run. It really did feel like a waste with such a great story to work with. But they completely ran out of story and it became so repetitive.

Even the people who continued to like the show mostly agreed that it really had a lot of issues. But there were fans who loved the main couple. I thought Kim Young Kwang and Soo Ae both did great, but their characters just became bland as they talked about the same stuff over and over. It had some good parts, but yes, big disappointment.

I sometimes don’t go for ratings either, as they can be subjectieve at times. It is sad to hear that this was such a disappointment 😦 It does go to show that even good actors can’t save everything.

Yes, very much. Many times the Korean audience has different tastes than the international audience as well as we each after our own personal tastes. And then sometimes a really good drama can just end up opposite of a really popular drama. Like Oh My Geum Bi and Weightlifting Fairy being against the hit Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. But yes, it’s always sad when you have good actors that get lost in everything wrong with a drama despite putting in good performances.

I was deeply disappointed in this show as well. It had so much promise, but squandered it all on a boring storyline. The first episodes had some great humor too–sorely lacking later on. I dropped this one after Ep. 14, and that was about 6 too late! Show also wasted too much time on the concept that Nan Gil was the stepfather of Na Ri. Argh!

I was so looking forward to this one, so that always makes the disappointment worse. Yes, those first episodes were wonderful, and I just kept wondering what happened? I thought they should have played out the mystery of Nan Gil longer and extended the fun couple bickering phase. They just ran out of story and kept repeating. I too was ready to drop right around the middle. But I hate dropping dramas, and the further into it the hard it is for me. So if I get halfway, I will usually finish it out. Ugh, so much wasted potential!

I’m done watching this drama, yet same as you I’m not satisfied with how the story goes and ends. But the actors are great ( Lee Soo Hyuk especially) 🙂 Hope to read more blogs of you about K-Drama 🙂

Completely agree. It started off promising, but ended up disappointing. That’s especially sad when all of the actors were great. I almost wished the drama would just focus on Lee Soo Hyuk since I too thought he was the best and really enjoyed his character. I hope you enjoy the reviews 🙂

Just finished this one last night and didn’t hate it but didn’t love it either. I completely agree with your review, there was just so much more that could have been done with a great cast and story that could have been fleshed out more. It was watchable for me because I just watched one episode per night which allowed the story to not feel draggy. I think if I tried to binge watch I would definitely have dropped it because for long stretches nothing seemed to be happening. Ah well.

Well, I’m glad you’re experience was at least a bit better than mine 🙂 It definitely was one of those that started out so promising and seemed like it could have been so much more but instead felt like a whole lot of nothing. It had Lee Soo Hyuk though, so I give it some credit for that 😉

I was happy to see Lee Soo Hyuk but was even more happy to see Kim Young Kwang after having recently watched him in Secret Life of my Secretary. He’s lovely. Gotta search for more of his work.

Kim Young Kwang has a nice varied catalog of work. Have you seen any other dramas from him? The first drama I saw him in was Pinocchio. He was so weird in that one! But he won me over 🙂 He’s also good in White Christmas. More of a jerk in that one, but I enjoyed his performance. And though I just thought the drama Lookout was just okay, Kim Young Kwang was excellent in it 🙂

I can’t believe I didn’t recognize him from Pinocchio and I loved him in that!! I’ll definitely have to add some of his other work to my watch list 🙂
