Goblin Nearly Doubles in Korean Drama Ratings in Its Second Week

Fantasy melodrama Goblin starring Gong Yoo, Kim Go Eun, Lee Dong Wook , Yoo In Na, and Yook Sung Jae continued to pull in outstanding ratings in the second week of its run. It nearly doubled from last week by bringing in 12.4% for episode 3 on Friday with a slight dip to 11.3% for episode 4 on Saturday.

Wow! Those are some crazy numbers for just the second week. The drama continues to garner a great deal of praise from fans, and I’m excited to see how these numbers play out in the coming weeks.

Goblin is a fantasy romance about a modern day goblin (Gong Yoo) who wants to end his immortal life and needs a human bride (Kim Go Eun) to do so. He ends up living with a grim reaper (Lee Dong Wook) who has amnesia. The drama will tell the story of the lives of those that see the souls of the dead to the afterlife. The drama comes from the writer of Descendants of the Sun.

Goblin airs Friday and Saturday on tvN.

Good ratings are good news. The writer must be sought after considering the jaggernaught ratings DOTS had, now this positive start for Goblin.

  I’m glad to see such good numbers. This writer is definitely popular. She had hit dramas like the Lovers series a decade ago and more recently successes like The Heirs and Secret Garden. Then of course DOTS and now Goblin. I think Goblin would have rivaled DOTS in ratings if it were on a main network. But being on cable allows it to be more creative, and the ratings there are still fantastic and even higher than a lot of network dramas. International fans have always been polarized by her dramas and seem to usually love or hate her style. Luckily, I’ve always really enjoyed it 🙂

    You make an excellent point that Goblin is not on a major network yet still getting good ratings. Didn’t you have an article recently about a show that had the highest cable ratings? What was the show and what ratings did they get?
    
    I concur the writer Kim Eun Sook has delivered good dramas – Secret Garden, DOTS, Goblin. I wasn’t a fan of The Heirs. But Gentleman’s Dignity was decent.
    
    In the end, I like that she’s able to be as creative as she likes on cable. If the ratings continue upward, a major network might offer carte blanche for her next drama.

      I believe the only one I referenced was about Goblin having the highest rated premiere episode. The highest rated cable drama I know of is Reply 1988 which hit over 18% for its final episode. Maybe there’s another one floating around that I missed, but looking back over the dramas that aired over the last few years, I didn’t see any that looked to be higher.
      
      But yeah, I think Kim Eun Sook was able to be really creative with Goblin, and I think she will be able to do about whatever she wants for her next project too. She has a pretty formula and a good handle on what makes dramas good 🙂

        Thanks for checking the high rated cable dramas. It would be great if Goblin exceeds expectations. Kim Eun Sook’s dramas have more depth than others. You like multiple characters not just the lead actors.

        You’re welcome 🙂 I’m really hoping it exceeds expectations too. There’s a fun excitement watching a drama do remarkably well and break records. And I completely agree about Kim Eun Sook. I’ve always enjoyed the fact that she seems to really create these nice worlds where the supporting characters matter and have depth. It makes a drama feel so much more full 🙂

    I did find time tonight, and I can tell you: this series keeps getting better and better. I am not a big fan of comedies, but this series humor is just seriously spot on 😀 And the chemistry of the characters is just amazing, not to mention the storyline. I am, highly enjoying this one. Can’t wait to start on episode 4 😀

      I’ve always liked this writer’s mix of humor and melodrama. DOTS was a fantastic mixture of genres, and I thought the humor was well done in that one. It sounds like Goblin has been able to achieve another good balance. And with so many actors that I enjoy as well as the fantasy story, I’m counting the days until I start it!
