Splish Splash Love tells the story of a high school student (Kim Seul Gi) who travels back in time to the Joseon era where she meets the young King Yi Do (Yoon Doo Joon). She is struggling in school because she hates math while he happens to love math but works to much trying to lead his people. They each need a little help, and thus our love story is set in motion.
Splish Splash was a cute little drama. The moment I heard about the story and the cast, I really thought this should be a full length drama. And after watching it, I still really believe that.
It did lack a bit of narrative flow which made it feel a bit choppy moving from one scene to the next. This was mostly because the drama had a lot it was trying to cram in to a short amount of time. We also weren’t able to explore our characters very deeply. The drama had quite a few music montages which took away some of the time that could have been used to delve further into the characters.
The supporting characters were barely developed at all. But we did at least look into the difficulties of the Queen (Jin Ki Joo) feeling lonely and longing for companionship as well as Che Ah Jin (Ahn Hyo Seop) as he tries to make a better life for himself. We also do get a little bit of palace politics to round out the story.
But Splish Splash Love’s strong point was the main couple. Yoon Doo Joon and Kim Seul Gi were adorable together. All of the scenes that included them were interesting and made me smile. Luckily, that was a large portion of the drama, and the music montages always focused on them, which was a plus.
Kim Seul Gi was as cute and funny as ever. She has such comedic talent that it is impossible not to shine through. And I actually felt that Yoon Doo Joon’s character was the most developed, and he was able to capture the youthfulness of the King as well his deep sense of responsibility to his people.
Overall, Splish Splash Love was a cute watch. Despite some flaws, it’s completely worth viewing just for the chemistry and laughs between the main couple.
My Rating: 6.5/10
