Love Rain - Jang Geun Suk and Yoona

Love Rain starts out set in the 1970’s as we follow the innocent yet complicated love story of college students Seo In Ha (Jang Geun Suk) and Kim Yoon Hee (Yoona).  Problems arise when In Ha’s best friend Dong Wook (Kim Shi Hoo) professes his love for Yoon Hee.  Because In Ha valued their friendship, he tried his best to let him have Yoon Hee.  But his and Yoon Hee’s love was too strong, and they couldn’t stay away from each other.  This created many problems within their group of friends, and eventually our lovers were forced to separate.

I keep asking myself, “Where was this gem of a drama hiding for me to have waited this long to watch it?”  Actually, it has been on my plan to watch list since the first month I started watching kdramas, but you know how it is, sometimes certain dramas fall to the wayside.  But I’m so glad I finally watched Love Rain!

Love Rain Korean Drama - Jang Geun Suk  Love Rain Korean Drama - Yoona

The first four episodes of the drama set in the 1970’s were amazing.  The simple love story was so sweet and pure with all of those adorable awkward moments.  I really felt like I was there as I was swept into the beautiful cinematography.  And what do I say about the music?  Breathtaking!  It set such an amazing mood.  I didn’t want to leave!

Love Rain Korean Drama - Jang Geun Suk and Yoona

Despite all of the relationship drama, I thoroughly enjoyed the main group of friends which included In Ha, Yoon Hee, Dong Wook, Chang Mo (Seo In Guk), In Sook (Hwang Bo Ra), and Hye Jung (Son Eun So).

Kim Shi Hoo was a new face for me as Lee Dong Wook .  His fate was to unknowingly like the girl his best friend was in love with.  He was a fun character to be sure.  Then we add in Hye Jung, the girl who likes In ha, so of course she dislikes Yoon Hee.

Love Rain Korean Drama - Kim Shi Hoo  Love Rain Korean Drama - Son Eun Seo

It actually took me a minute to recognize Seo In Guk with the hair and glasses.  I also adore Hwang Bo Ra.  She is absolutely hilarious, and I wish she was in more of the drama.

Love Rain Korean Drama - Seo In Guk  Love Rain Korean Drama - Hwang Bo Ra

After things end pretty rocky for our group of friends, we fast forward to the present day.  Jang Geun Suk now portrays In Ha’s son, Seo Joon, and Yoona portrays Yoon Hee’s daughter, Jung Ha Na.  I actually transitioned between the settings and characters pretty easily.

Love Rain Korean Drama - Yoona  Love Rain Korean Drama - Jang Geun Suk

The kids are quite different from their parents.  Seo Jun is cocky and rude while Ha Na is sweet, but quite spirited.  Unlike their parents who so quickly fell in love, these two dislike each other from the get go.  Thankfully, I found Seo Joon and Ha Na’s bickering quite hilarious.  Of course, Seo Joon and Ha Na soon fall for each other, and their love story is also quite adorable.  I’m also a sucker for watching the rude guy fall for a girl and trying to come to terms with it.  It’s just fun.

Love Rain Korean Drama - Jang Geun Suk and Yoona  Love Rain Korean Drama - Jang Geun Suk and Yoona

The love story of In Ha and Yoon Hee also continues in the present day.  They have been apart for most of their lives, and of course coming back together and sorting out their baggage brings challenges. It was also sad to watch their children’s relationship become complicated because of problems stemming from their parents.  I just wanted both couples to be happy!

Love Rain Korean Drama - Jung Jin Young and Lee Mi SookI should also point out how impressed I was with Jang Geun Suk.  While I enjoyed his performance in the classic kdrama You’re Beautiful, he just didn’t grab my attention.  But I felt that in Love Rain he got more of a chance to display his acting range.  He has a wonderful ability to communicate emotion through very subtle changes in his facial expression.  If you’re not looking closely, you might miss it.  He thoroughly moved me in this drama.

Love Rain Korean Drama - Jang Geun SukYoona was pleasant to watch as Yoon Hee/Ha Na.  She may not have the emotional depth as Jang Geun Suk, but I thought she did quite well with her characters.

Love Rain Korean Drama - Yoona

Kim Shi Hoo pops back up as the son of Dong Wook.  He now takes on the role of the sweet and supporting second male lead.  Also, Seo In Guk makes another appearance in the comical role of Chang Mo’s nephew.

Love Rain Korean Drama - Kim Shi Hoo  Love Rain Korean Drama - Seo In Guk

Be forewarned, there are some things a lot of people dislike in this drama.  There is a huge of lack of communication between the characters and a lot of unnecessary sacrificing of one’s happiness for the sake of others.  This pretty much goes on throughout the entire drama.  If those things bother you, stay far away.

Love Rain Korean Drama - Yoo Hye Ri

Also, the present day Hye Jung is a classic problem causing mother in law type figure.  Her troublesome antics are far reaching in this drama, especially considering she causes trouble for both of our couples!  She certainly is a difficult character.

But I wouldn’t let these things deter you.  Despite using some classic kdrama tropes, Love Rain executes them perfectly with a new sense of added depth that I found fresh.

So how do I describe Love Rain?  It’s like a traditional rom-com/melodrama fused together with the epic love of My Love Eun Dong.  In Ha and Yoon Hee’s timeless love story carries a feeling of grandeur throughout the drama.  I think it was a nice touch to use the same actors to portray their children.  The characters of Joon and Ha Na were different enough to separate them from their parents love story, but simply seeing the familiar faces and also noticing the minor similarities between both sets of characters helped me to stay completely connected to the original love story.

Love Rain - Jang Geun Suk and Yoona  Love Rain Korean Drama - Jung Jin Young and Lee Mi Sook

It took me way to long to watch this beautiful drama, and I’m so glad I finally did.  I want to give a big thanks to kfangurl of The Fangirl Verdict for giving me the final push to watch Love Rain.  One of the best recommendations ever!  I seriously need more kdramas like this, so other recommendations are welcome!

Love Rain - Jang Geun Suk and Yoona

This is one of those dramas that may look very flawed and clichéd on paper, but oh my did I fall in love with it!  It swept me into its little world, and I didn’t want to leave.  The music and cinematography was gorgeous all the way through.  I was so in tune with each of the characters and fully involved in their amazing love stories.  This drama just made me happy, plain and simple.  If you don’t mind some melodrama and enjoy romantic star crossed lovers, Love Rain is for you!

My Rating: 10/10

Isn’t it great when you fall head-over-heels in love with a drama? I know that feeling.

I haven’t thought about watching Love Rain but whenever I look it here and there, the first thing that captures my interest is the beautiful cinematography. The drama is surely a quality work in terms of technical execution.

I do find it funny that not only the main leads, but other characters too have double roles…haha…that I didn’t know.

I really like Jang Geun Suk (he was AWESOME in You’re Beautiful) and I feel sad that he didn’t make proper acting choices…he is really a very good actor. Hope to see him return with good projects in future and a seriousness as well.

Yoona was very impressive in Prime minister and I..

It is such a treat when you just click with a drama. That certainly happened with Love Rain. And yes, the amazing cinematography…every scene was beautiful just to look at. And I must say, I love the double roles! I always find it fascinating to see actors portray different characters in the same drama. I like dramas that deal with past lives for that very reason.

I liked Jang Geun Suk in You’re Beautiful too (though he did take some getting used to, lol), but I was very surprised how much I loved him in this. There’s definitely a touch of his You’re Beautiful character, but more toned down. Since I enjoyed his performance so much, I’ve just started Beethoven Virus. His character in that is a bit different from the usual roles he is typecast in. I really hope he does another drama soon 🙂

    Hi Kay,
I’m a total newcomer to kdrama, but absolutely loved Love Rain, and was wondering why it’s not on your must-watch list despite a 10/10 rating? I would have wanted to see where you would classify it, so I can watch similar genre. Any recommendation? Thanks!

Hi Rosley! Welcome to the wonderful world of kdramas 🙂 Yes, I completely fell in love with Love Rain too. I guess the main reason it’s not on my main recommendation list is that I created the list before I had seen Love Rain. But I do occasionally update the list by adding a drama I’ve seen more recently.

My main goal with the list was to offer a mixture of dramas that were either really popular among fans or some of my personal favorites. So there are a few dramas on the list I didn’t really care for, but are pretty popular among fans. And there are several dramas that I loved but didn’t include mostly because they contain certain elements a lot of people dislike. And people really seem to either love or hate Love Rain. Since it’s a bit polarizing, I just never added it despite my love for it.

I think Love Rain is kind of a mixture of melodrama and romantic comedy. But I think it leans heavier to the melodrama side despite having some humor. As for recommendations, it kind of depends on what you liked specifically about Love Rain? If you like the romantic melodrama style and the concept of fated lovers struggling to overcome their circumstances to be together, I would recommend My Love Eun Dong. It really has a similar tone and feel.

If you just like romantic comedies with a nice story in general, something like My Love from Another Star, Kill Me Heal Me, or Rooftop Prince are great options. If you want something more specific, just let me know. I’ve seen tons of dramas, and we can try to find something that fits what your’e looking for 🙂

Thanks for the quick reply, Kay 🙂

Yes, the melodrama kind that tugs at the heartstrings was what I liked about it. Got me hooked on Jang Geun Suk and so now I’m halfway thru You’re Beautiful, hope it’s as good. I watched Descendants of the Sun and I agree with you, all that hype but I personally didn’t care for it much, it didn’t dwell too much on the “love” part as much as I wanted to.

Do you watch Taiwanese/Chinese too? Autumn’s Concerto was another one that I really enjoyed, the kind that gets you hooked and watching 10 episodes in one sitting lol. I know Van Ness Wu isn’t as good as Jang Geun Suk acting wise but the storyline I thought was exciting enough to keep me obsessed weeks after I finished the show! With AC and LR, I even watched youtube videos of behind the scenes and downloaded the songs on the OST! lol

Also maybe its the chemistry of the lead actors too that made me love LR and AC, that sort of drew me into this make believe world that made me feel I was a part of. Thanks so much for your recommendations, I’ll try them after You’re Beautiful! Can’t wait to spread my wings and experience everything kdrama has to offer! 🙂

Yes, that was one of the main things I liked about Love Rain too. I also love Jang Geun Suk! He’s such a great and talented actor. I liked Love Rain more, but I also really enjoyed You’re Beautiful. It was a lot of fun. That’s where I first saw Jang Geun Suk, and I’ve watched quite a few of his dramas since then.

I’ve just started watching some Chinese dramas this year, but I’ve only seen a few. I have soooo many on my watch list though. I have heard lots of good things about Autumn’s Concerto too. It sounds like a good one 🙂

I love how kdramas are able to just pull you into their world and really make you care and feel for the characters too. And I love melodramas that tug at the heartstrings. Of the ones I recommended, I would say My Love Eun Dong is the most similar in feel to Love Rain, and it is an excellent drama. But my personal favorite of those I listed is Kill Me, Heal Me. The couple has great chemistry, and the story will definitely tug at your heartstrings.

If you don’t mind a little bit of action with your romance, dramas like City Hunter and Healer are generally considered must watches for kdrama fans. Both have solid couples with great chemistry and good stories. So maybe a couple more to think about 🙂

Definitely let me know how You’re Beautiful goes for you. You definitely have a large and wonderful world of dramas to look forward to 🙂

Yay for My Girlfriend is a Gumiho! Also my all time favorite drama 🙂 If you’ve already watched all of the ones on my top 10 list, a few I would recommend would be The Girl Who Sees Smells, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Goryeo, Entertainer, and if you don’t mind sci-fi, Circle: Two Worlds Connected. Maybe see if any of those look appealing to you. There are just soooo many great dramas out there to choose from though 🙂

I decided to stop watching by the end of episode 11. Sorry, I just did not feel it. But the first four episodes were very well done. I was very impressed. I just did not anymore connect afterwards. But that’s just me.

I also read in the comments section about Autumn’s Concerto. That is the Taiwanese drama I have been trying to remember. Forgot the title but thanks to that commenter I now remember HAHA. That might be the one I’m watching next.

Aww, that’s too bad. I guess they can’t all be winners though, lol. Even though I gave Love Rain a 10 and absolutely loved it, I hardly ever recommend it to people since it seems to be so hit or miss as to whether they will enjoy it. I also loved the 70s portion so much! It was so beautiful, and I remember really not wanting to leave and wishing more dramas were set during that period. But luckily I adjusted very quickly to the modern day and ended up liking it.

I remember watching the first ep of Autumn’s Concerto years ago and I just didn’t get into it. I usually give dramas more eps though, so I ended up putting it “on hold” rather than officially dropping it. Of course, that was several years ago, lol.

Yes, the 70s portion was kdrama perfection. The combination of silence (on the part of the cast), the right music, and the right cinematography. Nothing compares to it. The first four episodes can make it to my Top Ten. So maybe you know of other dramas with the same feel as it?

As for Autumn’s Concerto, my guts are telling me it is something I need to watch. If I remember correctly, the real story starts after a few episodes. Like Love Rain, the first few episodes are just a backgrounder to the main story. The first few episodes are basically Meteor Garden / Boys Over Flowers, especially since the male lead is one of the Flower Four in Meteor Garden.

Anyhow, hopefully my guts are correct HAHA.

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I found the first 4 eps so unique in tone and setting. Any drama that comes to mind is actually very different and probably just creating similar “feels” verses the overall feel. Maybe something will eventually come to me, lol.

Ah, Fated to Love You! Now that’s a drama I have a special place in my heart for. I hope you have better luck with it 🙂

I know what you mean. Love Rain is an amazing drama! I love those first 4 eps a lot too. Hmm, as for recs, it kind of depends what you like in particular. If you like star crossed lover type stories with that romantic feel, maybe something like My Love Eun Dong or That Winter the Wind Blows. If you like the 70’s time period, Lingerie Girls Generation is a really nice drama. Another just really super sweet romantic comedy drama is Longing Heart. If you’re looking for something more specific, just let me know, and I will try to help 🙂

Gotcha 🙂 Well, maybe give Longing Heart a try. I think it fits. Have you seen The Liar and His Lover? It’s a pretty sweet romance. Another really cute one would be Shopping King Louie. Though I would recommend watching the second ep on that one since the leads don’t have screen time together until then. Have you seen all of the popular romances like Descendants of the Sun, Legend of the Blue Sea, I’m Not a Robot, and My Love from Another Star? Those all have pretty charming leads, nice romances, and good endings. Just trying to gauge what types of dramas you’ve seen 🙂

But I was really hooked by the plot of the story. Until last night , I was thinking of something to watch and I suddenly remembered this drama, but the problem is I cant remember the title… So I began to search… That took me almost 3 hours… And finally after so many years I’ve finished it… And you know what…whooo… I can’t express what I feel… As if Like a teenager who’s inlove for the first time… I can’t even get myself into sleep… Oh did I tell you that I watched it overnight… As in until 6am… I just couldn’t leave it… l’ve even make the photo as my wall paper… That worst… Hahahha… Well, I have said alot.. ” basta panoorin nyo… Super nakakainlove… ” I have felt all the emotions… I cried, laughed, frightened, and even felt anger… Thanx to this drama …It brought so much memories… Must see…
