City Hunter is an action drama about a young man named Lee Yoon Sung (Lee Min Ho) with the secret identity of “City Hunter”. He is out to take revenge on the politicians who caused his father’s death many years before. His plan was to not develop feelings for anyone, but that changes as he grows closer to a woman he works with, Kim Na Na (Park Min Young).
City Hunter was probably the most talked about drama of 2011. It is an excellent drama with action, revenge, and a nice romance to boot. The revenge plot is well thought out and executed at a nice pace. This keeps the drama exciting throughout.
Yoon Sung tries to distance himself from his love interest, Na Na, by acting like a playboy and a jerk, but their lives continue to be entangled with one another despite Yoon Sung’s best efforts.
And when he realizes she may be in danger because of him, he can’t help but be there to protect her. The relationship between Yoon Sung and Na Na is intense with plenty of heart fluttering moments. As his feelings grow stronger for her, his mission also gets more complicated. These two were all kinds of swoon worthy!
Also, the complicated relationship between Yoon Sung and the father who raised him really adds fuel to the drama. It is interesting to see how Yoon Sung has different methods for revenge than the father who raised him, who is the initiator of the revenge plot to begin with. Because of their differences of opinion, the two quickly become at odds and are directly pitted against one another.
The Prosecutor (Lee Joon Hyuk), is also always hot on City Hunter’s trail. He doesn’t have the full story, and discovers many distressing secrets in his pursuit. The Prosecutor and Yoon Sung’s relationship definitely adds another interesting dynamic to the story.
I felt like this drama just got better and better as it went along. City Hunter is an exciting watch, and is great for anyone who likes a little action in their kdramas. It’s definitely one of my all time favorites!

Kdrama Kisses 
City Hunter was my very first kdrama, the one that started my addiction. It was in my Recommendations on Netflix and I didn’t even know it was subtitled until I was already hooked by the beginning action scene. I have re-watched it several times since and still love it. Yoon Sung is such a great character–the perfect drama hero.

What a great first drama! It was my second drama (I actually watched it simultaneously with Boys Over Flowers). You’re right, Yoon Sung is the perfect hero. I was immediately hooked, and I still use the City Hunter theme song as one of my phone ringtones, lol.

I love this drama too, but I don’t think there is anyway I could ever rewatch it. I experienced so much emotional trauma in the last two episodes (why, Young Joo, why?! You were my favourite character!!), I don’t know if I could put myself through it again! How did you feel rewatching it, knowing the ending and what was to come??

I think the sign of a great drama, or at least one that is great for you, is that you can rewatch it and find different kinds of pleasure from it even after knowing how it progresses and ends. There aren’t a lot of dramas that really surprise us with the ending, and the surprise endings aren’t necessarily good. In my opinion, most of the pleasure from watching any drama comes more from the journey rather than the destination.
There are some dramas that I keep watching just to see how they end. If I accidentally get spoiled while watching that kind of drama, I usually drop it. But those are not what I consider good dramas. The good dramas are the ones that can’t get spoiled even from knowing the ending.

I pretty much feel the same way as joybran2015. I have a motto that I adopted really early on in my kdrama watching: “When it comes to kdrama endings, expect the worst, enjoy the ride, and take it as a happy surprise if all ends well.”
But I know exactly what you mean. I was so saddened by what happened to Young Joo. It was only my second kdrama and it really through me for a loop. But I had no problem rewatching because I felt I was able to appreciate his character even more knowing what was to come. Is it still sad, yes, but it’s just one part of the bigger picture of the drama. And I’ve had my fair share of fav characters die, but I’m so adamant about enjoying the journey and the part they play. There was so much fun in City Hunter that I am still able to really enjoy it.

Hmm interesting (sorry joybran2015, it won’t let me reply directly to your latest comment!). Maybe I’ll try giving the series a rewatch in a couple of months and see how I find it then. I’m not sure if I would appreciate Young Joo more as much as pity him/feel saddened in every scene that he’s in, but I guess there’s only one way to find that out 🙂

Kay makes a good point about appreciating the character more after you know what is going to happen to him. I was very shocked the first time, but on subsequent viewings I found Young Joo more interesting and meaningful.

I loved this drama! But as much as I loved Yoon Sung and Na Na, I really wished they didn’t get as much screen time, or at least it was handled better; to me it felt like the series jarred a lot when we switched from Yoon Sung’s anguish over revenge and his father(s) to the happy-happy scenes between Yoon Sung and Na Na. I think the main focus from the plot, as seen in the first and last episodes, is really about Yoon Sung and his father (whose name escapes me; but the one who raised him). Still loved it, though!

I love this drama, Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young looks good together, their chemistry is great. I cried a bucket when Lee Hyun Juk died, it was so unfair :(, I cried also when Lee Min Ho’s father died, I can feel his sacrifice just so his son live. One of the best Kdrama I’ve watched.
